The truth is chocolate contains theobromine that is toxic to dogs in sufficient quantities. This is a xanthine compound in the same family of caffeine, and theophylline.
Other things that are toxic or fatal is raisins, grapes, tomatoes, and onions.

The problem, according to veterinary experts, is that eating a speck of chocolate leads a dog to crave more. It can mean that your dog will jump at a opportunity to get any type of chocolate, not knowing that certain chocolates are more lethal than other types. Larger amounts of chocolate, particularly of the most toxic type, can bring about epileptic seizures in some dogs, and in all dogs, can kill.

Chocolate is toxic for several reasons, the caffiene like agent is bad for their heart, can lead to seizures. The sugar can cause digestive problems like vomiting and diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration and other problems like pancreatitis and HGE. This is NOT an urban legend, I have seen several dogs die from it. It has NOTHING to do with an allergy, simply the amount of chocolate eaten in relation to size. For a 5lb dog 4oz of milk choc, 1.5 oz of semi-sweet, or 0.5 oz of bakers is considered a toxic dose. For a 75lb dog it would be 76oz,25.2 oz, and 8.5 oz. There is no good reason for your dog to have chocolate, even in small amounts.

Chocolate contains a compound that acts like caffeine on dogs. I's actually "Bakers" chocolate that is more dangerous to dogs because it contains more of it. Otherwise it can actually take quiet a bit of chocolate to harm your dog ( depending on size)

I've always been told never to give chocolate to dogs. Now whether or not thats actually true, I have no idea. But I'd just not do it to be on the safe side.

my chihuahua ate the remaining box of see's candies chocolate left on our coffee table. He's fine now... but we caught him jumping on our coffee table and tipping over candy dishes when we're away from home. He even tipped over a mini trash can with a lid that can only be open with the foot press and took a potato chip bag out of it to munch on it. He couldnt get it off his head so he ended up ripping the bag which still remained on his head by the time we got home (10 interval between us leaving and sister in law coming home). He is healthy! Junk food isn't good but they eventually get themselves into it. If concern check in with vet.

Because many dogs have a severe allergy to chocolate. My dogs aren't allergic to it, so they're fine when they eat it (found out by accident... don't recommend trying it out). It's like people who are severely allergic to peanuts, only a much higher percentage.
