When Jesus was arrested, were the soldiers who took him before Annas and Caiaphas Roman soldiers, or some kind of soldiers working the the priests?

Yeah, I understand what you mean by the Romans having the only military. But couldn't the High Priests have payed somebody to be soldiers for them, for cases like this? I mean afterall, they payed Judas to betray Jesus.

I remember from watching "The Passion of the Christ" that when some Roman Centurions asked Caiaphas what was going on, Caiaphas responded that Jesus had violated temple law, and the Centurion seemed unphased. So I don't think they would have been unphased had the Romans been the soldiers arresting him. But then again, the movie had alot of extra-Biblical elements to it.

I think they were the temple priests and the temple guards that came to take Jesus from the garden. I don't think the Romans were involved until Jesus was brought before Pilate. If I am mistaken, someone please correct me, I don't want to give out wrong information, thank you.

Roman soldiers, right, accompanied by Judas and a high priest? When Jesus was arrested in the garden at Gethsemane, Peter had sliced the ear of a Roman. Jesus stayed Peter's hand and then healed the soldier's ear.
I mean, only Romans had a military at that point. All other militaries in the land were outlawed. Correct?
Sorry that I'm answering your question with questions. I'm just trying to piece it together from memory and with "clues."

Ew, I think I'm wrong. "And immediately, while he yet spake, cometh Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. And he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead him away safely." Matthew 14:43-47

Personally I think that they were a Jewish mob. Roman soldiers were with them as they would be..if travelling alone at that time of night in such parts of the city...but I think the lower rank Romans basically let the Jewish people carry out their own stuff until it started getting carried away.
Honestly, who expects anything bad to happen on the night shift?
