Well, the only issue that if you don't eat a thing before is that you could run your blood sugar so low that you could be very dizzy and not feel so hot, which is the opposite of how a workout should make you feel.
If you eat too much, you risk getting cramps.
What I usually do if I go for a bike ride or something first thing in the morning, I have a banana or a glass of juice or something. Just to keep me going.

I have heard theories supporting both.
The theories go as follows:
If you eat before hand you are burning off the nergy you have just consumed for your breakfast instead of burning off energy in the form of fat.
If you eat after (ie exercise on empty stomach) then your body will need to dip in to its energy reserves to fuel you up and it will burn off muscle, hence you could lose muscle tone.
Personally I don't think that it matters all that much. Exercise is good for you whenever you choose to do it, so I go with whatever you are comfortable with. Some people couldn't handle a full tummy when exercising and others may not be able to get motivated till they eat. Do what's right for you.

The way the Army does it is.. everybody does PT early then you go shower and end up making a line in the mess hall for breakfast. Done like this for years.. I guess it works okay to eat after you exercise... Plus you don't want to feel like you got to barf all the pancakes you had before the run...

Have somethiing light about 1/2 or so before you work out. Then have a real breakfast afterward. A carb is good.
I just read this on WebMd or prevention a few weeks ago.

Before breakfast, cause your body need the energy to workout. If your exercise after breakfast, your body need the energy to diggest the breakfast. Better after that choose high protein as your breakfast.

I would say after, simply because if you have a full stomach, it makes it harder to do situps, pullups, running, or whatever. At least it always did for me. I've found that food I just ate still sits pretty high in the stomach and can attempt to come back up easily. Sorry for the visual.
