I am a Christian. Heres a question that has been raised in conversation lately. One person baptised Catholic as a new born. (But not ever practiced it or brought to a Catholic church when younger either.) Then as an adult decides they do not believe in Catholisism(spelling?).
Do you believe that once youre baptised something you are always that.
Do you believe that one can become a different one if later in life baptised differently?
Do you believe that when you were a baby you could not choose for yourself so your parents did for you (thanks to them) but that it is up to you/your duty (if you will), as an adult make the decision for yourself.
Can you CHOOSE to be say Baptist, or Jewish if you were christened Catholic?
Also, through the eyes of God...
will that person always be a Catholic?
I am not confused ..I know what I believe, I just wanted to see what others would have said if they were part of this previous conversation I recently had.
Thanks everyone

First of all. You or nobody else is baptized a anything, other than a Believer in Christ. Period.

Your sciptural baptism is spiritual, not by water or anything else. ok?

Lets see if this helps you.

This is a denominational question. That's why so many churches has split. You are going to get several yes and no answers.

First of all, the verses that says: be "baptized", is just that. You have to have a Greek concordance to understand "which" baptize" it refers too. Baptize, means "immerse". That's it. That's all it means. NO where does it say in water. OK?

It does say: Bring Jesus Christ IN your heart. It say: For ALL has been baptized "IN" Christ. It never one time says "water". You are "baptized" INTO the "body" of Christ, by "immersion", of your repentance. not water.

Why? You could baptize anyone by water and they not even know what your doing. Only YOU, can "repent by "immersion, it can't be done for you by anyone.
Jesus was baptized in water. YES. why? Jesus lived His entire life in the mosaic age, under the Law of Moses. John The Baptist preached, "water baptism". Jesus set a example of "obedience", by following the Law. John The Baptist said himself, There will be one come after me, that will "baptize" with the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ Himself, "baptized" nobody by water. He had the power to "save" people,Himself. Jesus spoke of "the age to come". What age is that? The "Christian age". That happened Acts. chapter 2. It was THEN, the Holy Spirit fell upon them in the upper room, and "filled" (baptized" by immersion). They all became in ONE accord.

The Bible says: You are "baptized" several ways. It never says "water" one time. Lets look at Baptized:

Into Christ Jesus Romans 6:3
Into Moses 1 Cor 10:2
Into one body 1 Cor 12:13
for the dead 1 Cor 15:29

Mark 16:16 He who has "believed" AND is "baptized" shall be saved; but, he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.

ok? That talking about John The Baptist "baptism" by water. READ the significance of the statement.

He that believes and is baptized (immersed in Christ) shall be saved. ok? He that disbelieved shall be condemned. You are condemned by disbelieving, not for not being water baptized.

You should be water baptized. Yes. BUT not as a prerequisit for salvation.

The Bible say: You must be born of water and spirit. right? ok.

When a baby is born, the baby spends 9 months inside you. IN what? water. Water surrounds the baby for protection. Just like John The Baptists preaching of "water baptism protection".
The baby is born AFTER what? The water breaks. The babies "protection just left. The baby now is protected by what? The "Spirit". Thats what Jesus Christ preached. When he died and descened to heaven, He sent the "comfortor" (Holy Spirit) Acts.2:38. That why all babies are going to heaven because they are protected by the spirit as soon as the water breaks. The water is no longer needed for protection in life. John The Baptists ministry is no longer protection of water. Your baptized IN the "spirit", in the name of the Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit.
Water baptism does NOT wash your sins away. Your sins are washed away with the Blood of Christ. Your salvation is made possible by the Blood of Christ. Jesus was crucified on the cross. They did not crucify a bucket of water. A bucket of water did not descend to heaven and send it's "comfortor".

Hi Al,

Baptism does not result in salvation, nor does it determine a person's religion. It is an act of obedience where a person proclaims publicly that they have put their faith in God and desire to live for Him.

Infant baptism in that sense does not really do very much for the child. Although i've seen churches do Baby dedications which was sometimes done in the OT (where parents would set their children aside to be used for God's purposes).

A person can change religions later on in life. Baptism does not finalize anything. It is an important act of obedience in the lives of many believers.

One can always choose to believe in Christ at any time during their lives. It isn't being Catholic, or Baptist, that saves you. It's recognizing that all have sinned and are need of Christ's work on the cross to be saved from their sins. Baptism is a step of obedience which new believers take to publicly declare their desire to obey God.

Hope that helps,

Nickster

You're not baptizes "into" something. A baptism has very little to do with Salvation or "being right with God." As stated by a few of those who have already answered, Baptism is an outward expression of one's faith. As you know, there are MANY people who believe that Baptism has some kind of significance that works in correlation with one’s Salvation and Religion/Denomination and makes you more spiritual and/or closer to God. With all due respect, to say, “I was Baptizes in a (_BLANK_) Church as a baby so that makes me (_BLANK_) and there’s nothing I can do to change it,” is foolishness. Please don’t take this statement the wrong way! I’m NOT saying that someone is stupid for believing what they were raised to believe. If someone you trust tells you is true, it doesn’t make you stupid if you thought you had all the facts. The fact that there are questions shows GREAT Wisdom!

Besides, technically you can’t baptize a baby anyway! Why? The word “baptize” comes from the word “bapto” (pronounced “BAP-tō) which means to dip or immerse. (Check Ref. Below) I don’t know about you, but I’m not letting ANYBODY dunk my 9 month old!!!

Bottom line: Your “Baby Baptisms” are a waste of time in my opinion. I’m not trying to knock anybody’s faith. As far as being baptizes into a particular church or denomination: I don’t think that is possible, because baptism has nothing to do with salvation, denomination or a particular church. Your baptism is simply you saying, “I believe in the saving power of God and this is my proof!”

I hope this helps! Be Blessed!

NO you are not always catholic. religion is man made. God wants us to follow his son jesus christ, hence the term 'christian'. Being baptised young means that you had water sprinkled on your head. From what i know God sees all youth before they can choose to follow his Son as innocent. It is only through exepting Christs offer of salvation will you become something always...and that would be saved. You have to believe that Christ died on the cross for your sins and was resurrected. You must believe in your heart and confess with your mouth this and if you believe you will be saved.
But to further answer your question....you have the freedom to choose to worship or use whatever religion you want regardless if you were ever baptised young as catholic.

It's possible to be re-baptised into a new sect of christianity-it's the whole notion behind being "born again". Although I would suppose if there were a god, it wouldn't matter if you even practiced the "right" religion or if you shunned religion altogether. It would be more about a person's deeds and how they treated their fellow man than based on any dogma a fallible human could come up with.

As an agnostic, I believe that god, or whatever you want to call it, is nothing more than a sprit that exists inside each of us. You can give the spirit whatever name you want (Allah, Vishnu, Yahwah, FSM, etc.....). In the end it is all your decision. I know of people who have been miserable in one religion and found a religion to suit their belief. As it is said, to each their own. It is up to you to search and find the right one for you. No one can say which belief is right or wrong as long as you don not hurt others by your actions or words. You can be a Christian, a Hindu, a Buddhist, an Atheist, an Agnostic or whatever but you have to learn to respect other beliefs and practices. Lack of it is the major cause of problems in this world.

The only thing that matters in regards to being a Christian is do you sincerely believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ and do you want to live your life according to the instruction of the Bible? Baptism is only an outward symbol of a repentant heart toward God. According to the Bible God sees all people in one of two ways, either a person who has eternal life through Jesus Christ, or a person who has rejected Jesus Christ and chooses eternal damnation.

1 John 5:11-12 -And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

I believe that baptism is an outward expression of an inward faith. I don't feel that infants should be baptised but rather that it should wait until they have the capacity to make the decision to accept Jesus as their Savior.
Baptism does not save souls - a pesonal relationship with Jesus does.

Babies are to young to understand. I mean what if that baby was baptized a devil worshiper?
In John 6:44 Jesus said no man (or woman) can come to me unless my Father draws him. For God to draw (call ) you have to be old enough to understand what your doing. God doesn't condemn those who don't understand.
Remember that Jesus Christ Himself wasn't no baby when He was baptized!
Also Gods church isn't called by any name except church of God or churches of God together in the bible. It's never called baptist, or catholic or any other religious name. Eleven times in the New Testament it's called the Church of God.

some people % reassurance, and that they form social bonds by skill of hating the same people and issues that people hate. people comprehend they % God, and that we are all somewhat in the same leaky boat -- i assume all of us might desire to bail. we will not say, "The leak is at their end. they are not bailing rapid adequate." The Bible isn't crap, apart from the music of Solomon (yet even it is exciting crap, if only for the incorrect reasons). although, somewhat apt edits, imaginitive or flawed translations, etc., have created some issues. The dogmata that folk upload directly to the Bible from their very own possibilities or philosophies ought to on occasion do greater good on your backyard than on your soul, because of the fact we are already conversing scatologically. go alongside with whom you please. i do no longer think of she skill in her coronary heart to annoy you, yet i must be incorrect.
