The two people present were Jesus and God. God was speaking to Jesus. God was not talking to himself. Jesus and God are seperate individuals, despite what trinitarians claim (John 14:28; 8:42). Jesus himself was created by God and Jesus had a share in the creation of all things, including mankind.
Proverbs 8:22-31
Angels are never spoken of in the Bible as being used in creating things. Therefore, God was speaking to Jesus.
The holy spirit isn't a person at all. It's actually the power of God. It's called holy because God uses it to accomplish His holy purpose (See for example Psalm 104:30)
Some people claim that the verse you referred to supports the Trinity idea. However, this cannot be the case. Trinitarians generally believe that although there are 3 personalities of the Trinity, there is only ONE true God. The scripture refers to God as saying "let us make man in OUR image", that is, a plural number. If God was a trinity, he wouldn't have needed to speak to himself. Rather, God was speaking to a completely separate individual- Jesus, God's only-begotten son (John 3:16). A son is never equal to his father (John 14:28).

The "Us" is considered to be the Father and The Son and The Holy Spirit. And in the beginging was the Word but you really should read the hole verse because you discover that the Trinity were in the word.

Well your mom is on the right track there. "Our" does indeed refer to the personage of the trinity. God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit. Remember Jesus said to the Pharisees, "before Abraham was, I am". All things were created by, for, and through Jesus.

God, our " Heavenly Father" was speaking to Jesus. I have same belief as johnusmaximus in the fact that the God, Jesus, and the Holy Ghost are seperate individuals.
Under the direction of our Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ was the creator (John 1:10; Hebrews 1:2).

Your mum is right I think, The Bible says In the beginning God created the heavens and the arth..........the Spirit of God hovered over the waters. Also God IS the word, thats why the Bible IS the word of God, given by God to several men to put into written form for us to be able to read and learn........
my understanding of the first bit of your question (and I'm certainly no theologian) is that God - by using the word US, meant that humans were given a soul, (the spirit), able to give and receive love, to care about and serve others without thought for ourselves (Jesus) and able to create, able - through faith and accepting Jesus into our lived - to also share a place in heaven with God, (God) Thats why we are in the image of God.
He created animals according to their kind, He created us in his image....
I hope that helps a bit, and doesn't confuse you even further
God bless
