It's possible, but it's awfully hard.

In order to burn 30 lbs, you need burn 700 calories more than your body requires to maintain equilibrium.

Assuming that you have an RMR of about 1300, and you're at a normal activity level, you need about 1820 calories per day to maintain. If you were to take the 700 calories out of your food intake, you'd be left with an 1100 calorie / day diet, which will certainly have a negative effect on your metabolism. (NOTE: Get your physician to check your actual metabolic rate before proceeding)

What to do ?

Your best bet is an even split between diet and exercise. Walking for 5 miles will burn about 400 of the calories for you, and is a low impact exercise, so you are not at a high risk for injury. (It means you'll be constantly moving for about 2 hours, though)
You can then subsist on a metabolically comfortable 1500 calories / day and still be working towards your goal.

Don't forget to drink a lot of water, and to make sure that your calories are coming from a balanced source. In that 1500, you should be making sure that you are consuming about 20 grams of fat / day.

----------------------------------

WORD OF WARNING - You asked a previous question about whether or not being 97lbs at your age and height is normal. It is. If you are trying to reach this goal, it's fine - but if you are already 97lbs and you want to lose 30, know that you will never get there. You will almost certainly die first.

Please be careful, kid. It's a cliche, but there is a lot more to beautiful than being thin, and a lot more to living than being beautiful.

Nope coz that wud be losing 1.666 pounds a day which is imposible . A normal fit person can only lose at the maximum 3 pounds a week. You can try to lose it but i wud opt for a more realistic goal. Why don't u eat 1400 calories a day and doing 1-2 hours of exercise a day or do wot u feel u cn do. You shud be getting at least 1 hour of exercise a day to keep the weight off. Search round some websites but don't become anorexic, just do it safely and please don't chose a really limiting diet.
good luck xx

No. Thirty pounds is 105,000 calories -- that would be a deficiency of two thousand calories per day. One thousand is pushing things, but if you get enough exercise (does not much matter, but swimming burns lots of calories) you may be able to do it in three or four months. As for specific intake, I can't advise without much more information.

You'd have to practically starve yourself. If someone loses 10 lbs in a month that is a lot.
