Oaky, I'll play Scrooge...
The first birthday is all about the parents, and any family. I personally think getting other people and kids together is more work than you'll probably end up appreciating. And, if you're one year old is like mine, he's starting to get a little weird around strangers and won't enjoy all those people around. My son just turned 1, and with his two naps and early bedtime, there wasn't much sense in trying to set up an elaborate party. So we kept it small and just had family.
The day of, we did cupcakes and hats, and opened presents with the grandparents. They got their special time, and got lots of his attention. He didn't have his nap or eating schedule interrupted. The next day, we met friends at the zoo in the morning. The kids don't know the difference, and it allowed us to keep the first birthday for those who would truly treasure it.
The later birthdays are way more about the kids. We're looking forward to the next one, but kept this one in perspective.
If your child can handle a lot of hoopla, go for it. But be aware that it really is for you. So if he's going to respond negatively, then don't be selfish, and wait until next year.

Bake (or if lazy, purchase) a cake. Invite family over. Sing, and soon after, eat the cake. The lighting of one candle on the cake is optional; the boy will not have the cognitive ability at this age to understand why or how to blow out the candle; actually, the boy will not remember a single thing about the day anyway. But have a good time!

What about a baby pool and put a little water in it. Invite family and a few of his little baby friends and then the babies can play in the pool and have fun together! (wiht supervision of course)
Get 2 cakes. A bigger one and a little bitty one. Give him the small one and strip him down to a diaper and let him TEAR into it! HE will be all messy but will ahve a blast (and it makes for VERY cute pictures). The other cake is for everyone else to eat.

we just had my babys dads niece her 1 year old party a few weeks ago, the best thing that worked for us was to throw a baby party, invite all his lil couzins or kids that he knows, have a set theme maybe bob the builder and decorate the kitchen or living room, buy a cake, make some lil treat bags and i would say supervise them while letting them color for a coloring conest, feed them lil snacks, play some music, lil kid stuff, cute things like that... after the party that we threw we had the family get together.. thats what we did... hope i gave some good help.

Well the baby isn't going to remember the party so do it for the people coming. Make it fun, if inviting other kids keep them in mind and have a clown or face painting...that's always fun.

What movies does his like or cartoons, if not things you like until he can choose. But allways add a blue or red color in the party decorations.

otherwise
a building block party

if summer... baby pool party... water play...
keep it simple whatever you do... save your money for when they are old enough to enjoy it more
