The thing about expensive food is that your pet will be less likely to develop allergies. Also expensive food is more filling, because they don't use fillers like corn or air, so your pet actually eats less. In the long run, expensive food really doesn't cost that much more then a cheapie brand.
With that said, I don't believe that IAMS is a great food. I prefer to feed my cat Natural Balance (any variety) or Innova Evo. These are great foods that I buy for my pets (and sell at my job) because I believe in them. And you should see my cat's coat, and how healthy she is.

IAMs is decent food. I've never had any problems with it. The thing with the cheaper foods (even Purina) is that many of them have a high ash content, which can lead to Feline Urinary Syndome, which can be fatal if not attended to. So, in otherwords, cheep cat fod can kill your cat. Another lesson I learned the hard way is that if you're feeding more than one cat and one has medical needs, feeding a kitten the medical needs food can cause organs to misdevelop, causing problems later in life. Talk to your vet to get a decent recomendation.

My two cats eat Wellness canned food (grain-free varieties) and a bit (about 1/4 of a cup) of Blue Buffalo dry food.

You should not get one with animal by-products in it-they are bad for your cat. Therefore, Iams is not good, although it's probably better than many of the grocery store brands.

Personally I use Whiskas which is one of the cheaper brands where I live. I personally wouldn't use IAMS because a few months ago I saw a news report that stated that IAMS did a lot of animal cruelty when testing there food. I don't even want to repeat what I saw it was so disgusting. Ever since then, no one in my family has used IAMS, because we don't want to support such abuse. Back to your question, when we got our cats we bought small packages of 2-3 different brands and saw which one our cats preferred. We lucked out and they chose one of the cheapest ones. Whichever ones they snubbed we donated to the Humane Society.

I heard that Iams was pretty good? I don't personally use it for my kitten yet so I dont know if cats would like it but its supposed to be more healthy for them. Right now I use Whiskas dry food and my kitten loves it!

My 1st instant answer is Iams, but if it is getting too costly, then I suggest you call your veterinarian and explain exactly like you are doing here...............there is probably the best way around the financial woes, and at the same time, keeping kitty eating good food, and keeping healthy. It is obvious that is so, otherwise, you'd not care a hoot, and go buy the local store brand with ???? in it (they say meat, but it CAN and IS as times: hoof, beak, claw, etc.-YUCK) I am very fortunate to have my 7 year old eating dry food for her whole life, and it is Science Diet, but I too started on Iams (Science Diet is up there in price, but a tad lower than Iams and up there on health list for sure) IF you keep kit on a dry food diet, then I cannot stress enough the importance of giving kitty alot of clean, fresh water, at least twice daily. You'd be amazed at the difference: One cat of mine is only canned food eater, no way will she stoop to dry food (bratty-babe),and HER water bowl has a tiny amount drunken from it at the end of the day because the canned food provides more water than I thought. Then, Kit#2, as I spoke of initially, is ONLY dry food lover, and she NEEDS 2 bowls of water daily-It is a must, especially in the heat, or winter, doesn't matter, cats can dehydrate easily as well as people do. Point is, cats on dry food, get no alternative means of water, which they need., so keep a close eye on the water levels and work/adjust accordingly. I ended up taking my kit that only eats dry food to the vet, for I was very worried about her drinking so much water (2 bowels a day???!)-That is when I was relieved to learn that firstly, my cat is in perfect health, AND that the dry food is more healthy for her. Secondly, all tests were negative for anything wrong (I was worried about possibility of diabetes with her drinking so much) and vet explained same to me about dry food: VERY healthy for kit, but to be sure and keep eye on water bowl, for it is more than normal to drink LOTS when on dry food diet. Hope this helps, check out Science Diet Dry food, in addition to explaining to your vet your dillema. (You know at times you can call or write to companies, such as Iams, and Science Diet, and believe it or not, sometimes you will get assistance from the company directly!!!!!-Happened to me once with my first baby! I wish you and kitty a long and healthy, happy life.

Purina Cat Chow. Cats love it, birds love it, all animals love it. That says one thing, the nutrition is there. Animals can tell.
It is not the cheapest, but it is the best and isn't that what it's all about?
