Any one who has been or is in the Navy, how many times are you required to do a 6 month cruise, I understand there is a required amount, and of course it could be extended, just wondering what it is like. ect..

6-years and 2-cruises + 1 shipyard-period

the cruises were more desirable duty IMHO

(cruises put more 'stress' on a marriage than yard-period but I was single back in the day)

for female sailors, I really don't know the personality-dynamic to diffferentiate between the two forms of duty in terms of preferablilty.

good sailing and fair winds

I've been in 10 years and have done 3 deployments. In the old days, it was 6 months on cruise, then 18 months "home", then 6 month cruise. That was the schedule for my first 2 deployments. Now, you don't know. My last deployment, we left early and came home late. Ended up doing just over 7 months. And it looks like they're getting ready to go again. A friend of mine a couple years back, did a 6 month deployment, came home for a month and a half, then had to deploy again for 4 months.

It's all about what's going on in the world.

My hubby was in for 10 years, 3 of those were shore duty, so in 7 years he did 3 different 6 month cruises. You are not required to do a set number of cruises, that's not how it works. If you are stationed on a ship, you go where the ship goes while you are attached to that ship.

It is called "sea duty" and it depends on the vessel's docking schedules and when you get relieved from that post. The tour of duty aboardship can go for as long as 6 months but there is rotation when someone else assumes your position and you get to walk on land.

I was in 5 years and did 3 deployments. there are people who join and never see a ship...case in point my father who did 6 years and never stepped on a ship. I did my whole time on 2 different ships. It depends on your job.
