Just fifteen years ago the stylish language was Japanese...

This depends on what kind of job you want to do, and where you plan to use your foreign language. The most commonly spoken language after English in the US is Spanish, so if you want to work in America using a Foreign Language then study Spanish. The six official languages of the United Nations are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. However, as the two main centers for the UN are Geneva and New York, French and English are most in demand. Likewise, the languages in most demand in the US Government right now are Korean, Arabic, Chinese, and other languages of South Asia.

I would definitely recommend Mandarin and a romance language. I would stay away from Latin. You can see the same routes in either Italian, Spanish or French. Once you learn one of these languages, you will be able to understand quite a bit when you read or hear the other two. It is also much, much easier to learn another language after you've mastered one already. I am not familiar with German, nor have I seen it widely recommended. But it may be, I just have not seen it. From looking into the FBI and CIA (where foreign languages definitely help you), Mandarin was a definite advantage!

Chinese would be difficult to learn since it does not have an alphabet and there are 211 dialects. Perhaps for the future Arabic or Farsi would probably be the most advantageous because considering the current state of world affairs trade and diplomacy will require the understanding of these languages. Spanish, Italian, German are fashionable but rather sedate.

It depends on where you live . I say you study spanish. In New Mexico , It's best to learn a little spanish . For example I know very little spanish but you will be very lost if you don't know some of the names of plants and foods. Also there a lot of resterants with spanish names . A little study of pronuciation would help . I think spanish would be good because you'll get better , high paying jobs by bilingaul . In my town we have the German Air Force on the base so German helps too. Just concider your background and what is highest population of a certain culture. I'm half german so I should focus on German so when go to Germany and visit my relatives it will be easier to talk to them .

French could be a good option, actually in Europe many people from different countries communicate their selves in French. When I was in the US Army base I made at stop in Germany and I went to have a coffee when I met this 2 gentlemen who started to speak with one in English and the other one in in German, which I speak, but one of them didn't know English and the other one didn't know German, so I translate for the German one if the other speak French which he agreed, then they started to communicate their self in French, that was cool and a relieve for me because I stopped translating.

The language of the country your living in. Chinese is not easy to learn because there is not one Chinese language. Even in China people from one area can't understand the people from another area. Probably the best thing to do is to learn body language and the culture so you can communicate with people all over the world.

With the 'war on terror' and interest (both good and bad) surrounding anything middle eastern, I would suggest learning Arabic or Farsi (persian)
