I don't know the origin of the idiom, but it is used to change the subject in a conversation to briefly mention something, as though you had nearly forgotten to tell the person you're talking to. Usually used at the end or at a pause in the conversation.

Mary: "So, that's the end of my car accident story."
Ellen: "My goodness. I'm glad you're okay."
Mary: "Oh, by the way, did I tell you my sister is having twins?"

' by the way' means aside from the main issue... it is different from but yet related to the chief subject of conversation .
e.g. I am going to the market . By the way, do you want anything from there?

It infers an after thought when you are speaking about something.
For instance, "I went to the store to get food for dinner, and by the way, I saw your sister. Then I went home and waiting for you to come over."
I planned on JUST telling you that I went to the store and then home and as an after thought I remembered I saw your sister.

I hope that makes sense....and btw have a nice evening.
