I am really curious why more people don't give to charities. I understand why not all people give to the homeless.. Many people feel like they are going to go and spend it all on booze or drugs. But what are your excuses for not giving to reputable charities online or in your community? I'm just curious.. Because even $1 can help someone in another country. Everyone has $1.. In other countries that is a weeks worth or even a months worth of food while to us it is just a pack of gum. In many countries they make less than $15 a year so if everyone just gave $1 in the right places they could change the world!

Like I said $1 - Everyone has $1.
As some of you have been so blunt as to point out about yourselves - you are selfish. Do you really think you have more problems than someone else? A little child who is sick and his parents can't care for him? Who is in the streets of filth and waste all day long and will die of AIDS?

At LEAST go here and sign up for the daily email. You just click in the email every day and food / money is donated by the advertisers and sponsers on the site. You don't have to give ANYTHING just literraly 4 seconds of your time. Or is everyone that selfish too?

I send care packages to soldiers and have many friends in the military. I participate in the shoebox present drive at Christmas time (where you send toys, supplies, toilteries to kids in other countries). I have a sponser child in Mexico. I do that click thing every day. I donate clothes. Everytime I see a street vendor I buy from them even if I don't need what they are selling, I know they need the money.
I will occasionally give money or food to a homeless man or woman. I live in Los Angeles its unavoidable.
I'm only 19. I work hard, go to college, pay my bills, and rent, like everyone else here does. I help my boyfriends parents pay bills when they need help.

I am an EX JW The JWs believe as most christians that satan rules the world of mankind. Therefore, giving to worldly charities is like giving to satan in support to his rulership. Hence! they do not give to worldwide charities, or shouldnt do!! However as one or two JWs have mentioned, they do donate & support in world disasters. What they DONT SAY is that 'MOST' of that help is for those in their own religion to rebuild kingdom halls and homes lost by tragic circumstances. With a little splashed out for a so called 'good witness', to others. So whether the cameras are filming or not. Witnesses look after their own first and others as a hypocritical witness. Ask them how many worldly children they fed in africa without the witnessing work? The answer will be none!

The liberals will give all my money away. I don't even need to think about it. It's already done.
Seriously though - Americans give more money than any other nation - are you seriously asking this? Katrina victims (charities) received 500million the first week - from PRIVATE donations. What the hell are you whining about?
Kermit doesn't have a dollar - but certainly has a computer and time to answer this stupid question... laughable. I have a lot of cash - but I won 't donate it - the government and liberals will take it soon enough. I donate TIME... that is what is REALLY NEEDED.
Sobrien whines about CEO's with billions, as they put it, who don't donate.... laughable again. Bill Gates is a great example - not only for what he and his wife have given personally but for all the millionaries he created that become philanthropists... people are so mislead by this "people of the people" liberal crap. Capitalists are making the world burn and turn and giving the whole way around.

Your charity towards others is misplaced. Many charities spend most of their income on 'administrative' costs...including substantial salaries to the officers, other funds are often turned over to the local governments and by the time it gets to the grass-roots, there is nothing left. Abbott Laboratories gives millions of dollars in drugs every year but as a physician in the field, there was hardly enough to treat a single patient....the rest had been sold into the blackmarket and further fattened the pockets of the 'administrators'. Giving money does not aid people, it is only a temporary relief which needs to be continued with further money. A better method is to make the people self-sufficient so that they can help themselves. Teaching them new techniques in farming and such...but a handout is the same as giving a beggar a dollar...he will be back tomorrow. The US has attempted some of this by the Peace Corps but many efforts were defeated by the corrupt regimes of those countries...they didn't get anything from it and made life difficult for the volunteers. There are very few 'reputable' charities in the mode you describe...check the salaries of the executives of such noble missions. I have spent most of my life in Asia (I am white, American) and I have seen a lot. You see posters of a starving child which gives you pangs of grief...I see many Indian families living well (middle class level) with people who sponsor children. Be wise and cautious on how the money does any good...remember a case history of the Tasadays (supposedly a stone-age culture) living in the Philippines...Marcos moved the army in to protect the people (or later as it was discovered to keep people away). He appointed a special administrator to take charge, and that administrator solicited international...and got it from some of the well known people world wide..about $100,000,000 worth. Marcos was overthrown and the new leader Aquinos then allowed BBC to send a film crew to visit the Tasadays. One of the crew noticed two things...they were eating white rice (not native to jungles) and cigarettes.. the natives were hired by the government, really lived in a nearby village and shed their clothes to act the role....the whole gimmick was a scam...the administrator had already fled to Costa Rica with 30 million US dollars...and died there of drug overdose. Is this how your money works?

On one hand I agree with you. I did donate to the Katrina victims and look where that money went. I do volunteer at different places in town and when I find a program that is reputable I will donate. On the other hand, since the United States has so many poor and homeless people why not start here first? Chairity begins at home.

I give to the charities that I know the money actually goes to help
people and not to line some bureaucrat's pocket. The smart person does not just hand out to everyone & for everything. There are a lot of real charities out there and there are a lot more that is pocketing more than what goes to people. I give more locally than nationally.

Many people are sceptical of charities. I don't want my money going to buy new desks and pay for expense accounts of executives of charitable organizations. Some are better than others, I know that, but a big credibility question turns many people off. Can you blame them?
How about all those movies stars like George Clooney who got free press right after 911 when they collected money specifically for 911 victims. Then Bill O'Reilly's people found out charities were divvying up the money for other things and or banking it and the money wasn't going to where they said it was. Then the movie star creeps got mad at O'Reilly because he questioned them as to why they didn't follow up themselves. Because of him charities now specifically (like Katrina) keep that money seperate and give it to the specific tragedy, etc.

Some people, like myself, would rather do volunteer work than give money. Some people give clothes, or come from big families and give to their own families who are in need. Most people give money because the amount they give is tax-deductible and those kinds of things help them out at tax time so they can get a refund. Usually when you give money you own a home, and you do it for tax purposes. When sending to some organizations not all of the money gets where it's supposed to go.

i dont give to others because i have nothing to give. my husband is in the navy and is currently deployed, military men and women dont make squat for pay, i raise our 2 yr old and 4 month old on my own at the moment, and to pass the time by i work a dead end minimum wage job which most of my paychecks go to a babysitter. my husband and i also have our fair share of debts to pay off. i dont not give my money away because im selfish, its because i have nothing.
you want to talk about people not giving to other people, why dont people support our troops, the men and women that give up time with there families to fight for the freedom of everyone else. i get no thanks for my husbands services. just as you feel its not hard to give money to the homeless, its not hard to pick up a pen and paper to write a letter, or buy a few things to send a care package to a soldier who has got no one back home to even care about them, you wanna talk about homeless people, ya i feel sorry for them, but theres way to avoid being homeless, instead of spending there money on beer and drugs many years back, they should have attempted to do something with there lifes, support the people who really need supported

One of the biggest problems is that I have no money and am actually in need of charity myself. But also, it is because I do not like even 1 penny to line the pockets of CEO's of charities..the United Way comes to mind.

I actually dont have an extra dollar. Not saying there aren't other people worse off than me, but at this point, all I can do is donate my clothes.
And Don't forget, dontaing $ isnt the only thing people can do. They can volunteer at community centers, or visit old people in nursing homes, etc.
