I'm curious if anyone would know what the cause of this would be. My wife's son seems to cough after laying down for an hour or so, so much so, that sometimes he will vomit. This doesn't happen every night and his temputure is normal and he's very healthly. I'm just curious why he'll have these coughing spells. After he vomits (if he vomits), he's fine, perfect, having fun, running around doing his normal thing. Also what is weird is that she sleeps with him in her bed, when this coughing spell happens, however, sometimes she'll remove him from the bed and bring him out to the living room, lay out a soft blanket and if he's still asleep when she moves him he'll just continue to sleep with no problems. Anyone ever experience this with their children?

Could it be:

An ear infection?
Allergy?
Pneumonia?

Normal responses will be take him to the doctor, I understand this and she is on Thursday but before she does I just wanted to ask if anyone has ever experienced this?

it could a reaction to airfreshener, purfume, cologne, or scented candles.does he sleep with his mouth open? it could just be dry mouth. when your wife moves him it might remind him to moisten his muoth. then he's good for the night.

It sounds like it might be acid reflux. This causes a backup of stomach fluids into the esophagus when you're lying down. You choke on the fluids, vomit the excess, and you seem fine except for a little heartburn afterwards. If not treated, it can lead to permanent damage of the valve between the esophagus and the stomach.

But I AM NOT A DOCTOR. Regardless of what this is, it IS NOT NORMAL.

SEE A DOCTOR.

I've not experienced this persay, however, I know when my sinuses are acting up due to weather, seasons etc. I get a lot of drainage that makes a constant ah-hem, like clearing the throat. Maybe he's got drainage and could see a ENT. (Ears, Nose & Throat Doctor). Just my opionion, sorry I haven't actually heard of anything like this. Only time I've heard a child throw up like if they've been crying really really hard and they choak and gag themselves from all of the blubbering. Does that make sense? Anyway, good luck. P.S. I'm sure Mom is just worried about him and that why she wants to stay with him until he's sleeping comfortably. God Bless

It sounds to me like severe acid reflux, which may either get worse or better with age. I know that I, personally, have had similar problems all of my life, although my symptoms have improved GREATLY since I began to see a doctor for the conditon, who prescribed Nexium. The coughing is probably the result of stomach acid coming up his esophagus and irritating his throat, and the vomiting probably occurs when he coughs up the stomach acid. I strongly suggest that you take him to the doctor- it's probably not a serious problem, but he, your wife, and you will all sleep much better once it's fixed. Good luck!

My baby has the same problem. Sometimes he coughs badly he vomits lying down. I learned that if I'm going to give him his bottle, he has to be propped up on a high pillow to let the milk settle in his stomach or I take time to burp him heavy as he is. Then I changed the bedsheets to good cotton sheets because the ones I used were giving off fibers that made him cough. Unless he really has a cough, its the only way for them to expell phelgm.

Sounds like he is suffering from distruptive sleep apnea. His throat closes down, he quits breathing for a couple of seconds. He starts breathing again and vomits. Get him to a doctor fast. He could swallow his vomit and it can cause serious damage.

Sounds like he's allergic to something in the bedroom. Try an allergologist. Let's hope it's nothing more serious like sleep apnea. Goodluck.

Maybe congestion due to allergy's. I sounds like something is draining into his chest. That's why it would happen when he is only laying down.
Good luck with that.
