It depends really on the severity of the break.

A hairline fracture is like a mosquito bite when compared to a compound fracture in which bone has splintered and erupted through your skin.

I broke my arm when I was 12, doing the high-jump in gym class and landing on my arm. The PE teacher freaked out when she saw my "crooked" arm, but it only felt like an ache. Never did hurt very much.
