Unfortunately, nobody knows the precise reasons why about any of the factors behind the mechanisms involved with IBS, or similar digestive disorders. I do not have IBS, I have an unnamed digestive disorder similar to IBS but without enough of the symptoms to actually classify it as IBS. The feeling of and too often, the actual necessity of needing the restroom make no sense to me. Sometimes after eating seemingly bland food, the cramps, nausea, etc., begin before finishing the meal. Other times I eat pizza or spicy foods and things seem normal. A week later, the bland food works fine for me but the spicy foods have me in agony. The times I eat the meals makes no noticeable difference. Eating smaller meals rather than regular meals makes no difference either. Sometimes I stubbornly go all day without a meal just to avoid the cramps and nausea. Ironically, about three years after this began for me, I developed type-2 diabetes, which I so far, manage by controlling my diet. When I choose the stubborn route of going without meals, my blood sugar becomes unstable. The whole thing becomes this macabre balancing act between the two problems.
All of this began for me nearly 8 years ago and despite exhaustive comprehensive tests, the doctors cannot offer any explanations or, even worse, any relief. I take a couple of prophylactic medications in an attempt to avoid the nausea and cramps. This works sometimes and not at other times. For the nausea, I take 25 mg. of Promethazine, and for the cramps, I take Belladonna with Phenobarbital. I take these thirty to sixty minutes prior to meals. If the nausea becomes unbearable after a meal, I may take another Promethazine an hour or more after the meal.
I wish I had some helpful answers for you. Just know that others suffer along with you. I tried some of the help groups online, but they failed to offer me any comfort: others in the groups get a lot from them. The one conclusion I reached after two and one-half years of grueling tests and procedures was that I chose to stop any further tests and procedures. I decided that I had suffered enough tubes, cameras, probes, etc., going into the various places doctors like to put them. By chance, if the doctors kindly offer you a flexible sigmoidoscopy, run fast and resist looking backwards! That thing is not flexible and they told me that I might experience some “discomfort.” When the doctor finished, I stood up from the table, and with what dignity one has in a hospital gown, ordered him to disrobe and get on the table. I felt he needed to learn the difference between pain and discomfort. That test galvanized my decision about stopping any further tests and procedures.
Along with my empathy, I wish you a lot of luck!

After I posted this, I saw that a few others posted some information, and I felt compelled to comment on their posts.
While depression and anxiety disorders may have a causative relation to digestive disorders, doctors have yet to determine which of them causes the other. While some people find some relief by taking antidepressants and/or ant-anxiety medications, others find the drugs unhelpful.
The suggested diet of well-washed fruits, vegetables, and fiber containing foods may actually cause more distress with IBS and similar digestive disorders. The new drugs on the market for IBS may offer some relief, yet I prefer to wait and see if the new drugs cause any unforeseen maladies. I became a victim of one such drug in the early stages of its release, and suffered some very unpleasant and permanent side effects.
The advice about digestive disorders leading to immune deficiencies is sage advice. The digestive system provides the nutrients required by all of the systems in the body. When the digestive system begins to fail, expect a cascading effect on the rest of the systems in the body caused by a combination of the lack of proper nutrient absorption and physical stress.

I bet he has some embarrassing noises too. maybe you can save up and a place with 2 bathrooms. I agree with the CD player and I bet he knows if you plan on getting a place. My husband and I bought a home with 3 bathrooms and that makes those embarrassing bathroom moments easier. He teases me when I run downstairs to use the potty. he does it in good nature and I have heard him fart and I giggle. He giggles when I go outside for fresh air after eating beans! Just tell him that when the music goes on that you going potty and you will hear his too! That is part of living together. I would save for a larger place and an extra bathroom is not all that expensive.

Something called Senna helps. I wouldn't eat things harsh to the stomach, I'd stick to fruit and vegetable leaves, uncooked but well washed.

Like me, you probably have a food intolerance. Like a food allergy, but you won't die from it, just be miserable.
Google "elimination diets" of you want to put effort into finding what foods bother you.
Or go to www.leapallergy.com
