To build muscle you should consume 1.5 - 2 grams per lb (body weight). Yes, your body will expel what it does not use, however it can be very taxing on your liver, so it is better to be sure you use a good quality protein. Note: consuming protein will only be effective if you are working out. You will not build muscle just by consuming protein.

Make sure to consume a good quality whey protein within 30 mins of completing your workout. To increase your body's ability to build muscle, I strongly recommend you drink casein protein before bed. This kind of protein digests very slowly and is still available 4 hours after you go to sleep, which is around the time your body will be doing the repair work on your muscles.

You can find brand name protein powders, drink and bars on any one of the following websites. They are less expensive on-line than in the stores. All carry quality products.

If you don't like the taste of protein drinks, try mixing them with half water/half apple juice, in whatever amount is recommended on the label. I make mine (chocolate protein) in the blender with the water/apple juice mix,a small scoop of reduced fat Smuckers peanut butter and ice. It has the consistency of a frappe and will taste just like a Reese's peanut butter cup.

Good Luck
