In the U.S. polygamy is illegal but Peter said we must obey God rather than man. What is the right course?

Deu 25:5 If brothers live together, and one of them dies, and has no son, the wife of the dead shall not go outside to a strange man; her brother-in-law shall go in to her, and take her to himself for a wife, and shall perform the duty of the levirate;
Deu 25:6 and it shall be, the first-born which she bears shall rise up for his dead brother's name, and his name shall not be wiped out of Israel.

Did you know that Jesus explicitly stated that he did not overturn ANY, even "The Least of" the laws of the OT?

So these people dismissing the OT must never have read the bible.

ahhh, pick & choose christianity.

isn't it fun?

This is another example of picking and choosing what commandments we would like to follow out of the menu.
The commandment in question is a part of the Mosaic Law, and is part of the Old Covenant. Jesus gave us one commandment to go with the New Covenant. The early Christians had a special conference to decide whether or not Christians are obligated to follow these Mosaic Laws and it was decided not. Paul says that if one does decide to follow any of the Old Testament laws, then s/he is obligated to all the rest also. So if you want to marry your brother's wife, you are also obligated to all the rest of those commandments that you are looking at in Deuteronomy and Leviticus and Number. If you want to stick with the New Covenant of Jesus,, then be faithful to the one wife you have and love her well.

That has been the tradition in other cultures too. I believe in free will. I don't really have anything against polygamy, unless the women are exploited. Personally in our family, I don't want another wife around here. Neither does my husband. If the widow without a son lives in a monogamous culture, she should find a new husband of her own.

Deuteronomy = old testament. in other words, that's part of the old mosaic law.

Christians do not follow Mosaic law. Do you see Christians keeping Kosher? No. Why? Because Jesus created a New Covenant for Christians, such that we need only follow Him and His example, not the old Mosaic laws.

This was spoken in the respect the brother was not yet married. If the brother is married that becomes void.
The Lord does not want any man to commit adultery.

I suppose if you're interested in keeping Levitical law then go for it. While you're at it you might want to get circumcised, sacrifice unblemished lambs for your sins, and follow dietary ritual.
However, in the New Testament it says that Jesus Christ fulfilled the law so we are free from such requirements.

OK-the old testament was Law, given to the Israelites, becoz they needed it spelled out for them. God was basically saying "Take care of widows and orphans."
Then when Jesus came, the old tesament was no longer the measurement we needed to become acceptable to God, and Jesus became the Law. So we follow His example. And He said "Take care of the widows and orphans."
And apparently, we still needed it spelled out for us, becoz we are only looking to find what we can GAIN from the Bible, as opposed to what we should LEARN.

Jesus 'fulfilled away' the old testament. That means you can ignore it all you want, except for tithing, gay bashing, and mindlessly posting the 10 commandments everywhere you can plaster it.

Oh yah, and "suffer not a witch to live". That one was pretty important in the not too distant past.

Nice, nice. Haven't you anything better to do than twist scriptual readings into something sick? No doubt this may have been the norm back then, but so was animal sacrifice. Do you want to start doing that too?
