I have 4 small square canvases, I want to hang them all in a dining room. I have prepared the backgrounds, 2 have cool colors, and 2 have warm colors. What should I paint as the theme for all 4?

Something that you find particularly calming and relaxing. Maybe there's one particular memory in your family's past that you can immortalize on canvas?

What is the overall ambience of the room that you want portrayed? Formal, semi-formal or casual. Flowers are the rule of thumb. Try something besides roses and daisies though. Bird-of-paradise, orchids, Dragonflowers, any exotic tropical would lend an elegant and unusual persona to the room. If flowers are too redundant, how about something fanciful and frivolous? With four canvases, two with a Gentleman theme and two with a Lady theme...like a top hat, walking stick and white gloves on one and a tuxedo with boutinere on the other. For the Lady...a Purse, tiara and corsage on one and a beautiful, Cinderella Ball Room Gown with slippers. Both of these would compliment each other and lend a balanced welcome to everyone in the room. Good luck and sounds like a fun project!

When you're an artists and you're not quite sure what to put on a canvas I would back away from the canvas. Put the issue into the back rooms of your mind. Clear your mind.
Instead of you seeking the answer let the answer seek you.
Go about your everyday life. Something will come up on it's own, an image perhaps, a word or two, a surprising encounter, that will give you your answer.
Trust your instincts when it happens. For creative people it always happens.

The Chinese say (in Feng Shui) that you should have a picture of a bowl of rice, then the family will never go hungry.
How about 4 impressions of something like chilli peppers or apples - the same format but different colours pertaining to your decorating theme.

Happy little trees. (Thank you Bob Ross).
Sorry, couldn't resist..especially after just seeing that Gameboy DS is coming out with a Joy of Painting game!!
Real suggestion..how about landscape pics of all 4 seasons? Then you can do 2 warm, 2 cool.

Try to work with shapes and texture so that if you put them together it creates a nice contrast, but still looks nice together. Ideas on Art.com - go there - happy painting!
Acrylics or Oils also mix well with sand - it gives a little texture and even depth to some paintings... try it! It's FUN!

fruits and vegetables. not very easy, but they're nice.
My kitchen and dining area are full of different types of fruits (mainly apples) and I like the warm country feeling they give. Background colors should be warm in this situation. (just my opinion)!!

Dogs playing cards. You should also cover the dining table with green felt.

Some still-lives would be nice but very common. You should try some trompe d'olieil for an interesting twist. It ususally looks very good also.
