Because Mankind is searching for something we know is there but because we cannot use our dominant senses to identify its presence, we keep searching for a way to understand why we feel the way we do. Religion isn't belief nor is it faith, so it really can't be said in a manner that makes them interchangable. Religion needs faith to prosper, but having faith isn't the totality of religion. Belief, unlike faith and religion, can stand on its own two legs because both faith and religion are by-products of it. Belief in God doesn't need a specific religious root because religion didn't create God.

Why do so many non-relgious people provide all the answers!
It's because sex and drugs and rock n roll is great until it's your 14 year old sister that falls prey to it and gets both knocked up and VD. Then it's not so cool.
It's a system of beliefs in a creator, a life and and afterlife.
A way to live that treats your 14 year old sister with respect and protects her.
Don't get me wrong, not all religions do this, just like not every philosphical lifestyle is adverse.
But good religions are about helping you out when you're stranded miles from home because they're not stuck up.
Good religions are about taking you in when your house burns down. If you don't think the Red Cross or Salvation Army has some moral code, you're wrong.
Moral codes come from a belief system.
Belief systems often come from religion. Not always, but often.
The out for themselves people are the ones who knock your sister up after she gets so drunk at a party she falls down.
Their religion is get her while she's hot, down and out and don't care about tomorrow, for tonight is fun night.

Religion is a way of life for more than half the world. If you were to add up all the religions and accounted followers I'd bet you'd be surprised by the amount of believers...be it Christian, Jew, or Miscellaneous.
Structure and explanation is what is required for 99.9% of humans in everyday life. We need to understand why we need to pay that bill, or why we have to wait in that line etc. The same holds true for Life. We need some sort of structure in why we are here. Even if it turns out that we did evolve from dirt, what created the dirt. Big Bang???? What Created Big Bang??? Heat??? What created the heat to create the big bang that created the universe that created the milkyway solar system that created the galaxy that created our system that created our earth that created our dirt?
As long as people have an unanswerable they tend to believe that their minds are not quite eveolved enuff to figure out the answer...thus BELIEF.
Overall belief is the right answer anyway....even if the question is askew? We might not have all the right answers but we know that belief will answer all.
Thank God he gave me the strength to write this.

Because people want to know where their soul is going after they die. Thats kind of important don't you think?
And I guess the muslims think about it even more because the Muslim religion is spreading more and more each year,
Europe never had many muslims, now look at Britan and France
and other european countries. There are more religous people now than there ever has been in the history of the world.
Sadly not all can be correct, someone has to be wrong.

It has something to do with the brain and psychology. Long ago, it might have been beneficial for people to be religious, but now, there is no more pressure for that type of faith.
Therefore, religions are on the decline.

Some Christian writers have said we were made with a "God Shaped Hole" that needs to be filled with something.
I also think that its part of humanity to look for something greater than us-- be it education, community, family, faith or whatever. (Which is just a different way of saying the same thing as my top paragraph...)

To make your life & life decisions easy -
Believe it or not, many people do not wish to make their own decisions or feel insecure if there is nothing to underwrite their decisions that they made out of their own experiences and opinions for the fear of being fully responsible for the outcome.
Many people want to be told what they should do and how they should live rather than to live a life at his/her full discretion.
Also, it is quite natural that you want to be with the people with whom you share your thoughts with - that I think also accelerates some people to be more religious, because he/she belongs in a group.
(and I think I am reasonably religious)

Because we are spiritual beings having a physical experience.......so naturally we are drawn to that which effects our soul. We also have a need to understand how and why we are here. Some people need to believe in something bigger than themselves.......
