I'm planning a 12-16 hour flight (probably 1-2 hour stopover between connecting flights). Will my golden retriever be ok in cargo? My biggest concern at the moment is that if she pees, it will leak out of the case, and damage other luggage. Or, if she poops, and the crate is rolled, she would come out covered in it. My plan is to have her sedated the entire trip.

Pets dont go in the same bin as luggage. Some airlines cant even have pets, so check with the airline. Because the cargo area isnt always heated, which means if your pup is in cargo he will freeze to death, because of the tempurature, lets say 30,000 ft high.
So airlines are very strict with pets, and your pet cannot go in the cabin unless it is a service animal.
Hope this helps, call the airline.

dogs don't normally go in the crate b/c they don't like being in their stuff. My concern isn't for your dog going to the bathroom, my concern is where are you going? Some countries will quarantine animals when they enter a new country for at least 30 days to make sure the animal is desease free. Please make sure that the country you are taking your dog to does not do that.

Oh yeah, before you put him in the crate, lay down some diaper pads (you could buy them at the drugstore.) It has plastic on one side and absorbant pad on the other side. That way you don't have to worry about the liquid spilling.
