My wife and I have a minature dachshund. He just turned 3. Really good dog.He seems to like his crate. He is in it about 15 days a month for around 8 hours a day. The rest of the days my wife or I am home and hes free to go about the house. Hes in it every night for 8 hours or so sleeping. Most mornings we have to wake him up. After we take him out to use the bathroom, he sometimes goes right back in it to sleep, so he must like it. My wife and I are gonna be out of town, from around 7am to 7pm 2 days a month for the next 4 months. Is 12 hours to long to leave him in it? Like I said, itll only be 2 days out of the month, and they will be around 2 weeks apart. We think the world of him, so we want whats best for him. We dont have anyone who could watch him, or even take him out to the bathroom sometime during that day. We dont like the idea of leaving him out all day.So, again, my question is, is 12 hours ok if its only 2 days out of a month? Thanks!

It would probably be safer than leaving him outside.
Do you have a safe garage that is not to hot or cold he could be in? That might be better than being locked in the kennel. Leave the kennel in there but open and he could get out to run a bit. That way if he needs to potty it will not be in the house and could be cleaned up ...maybe even puupy potty training pads left in one area of the garage for him.

It's not ideal to leave a dog in a crate for such a long time, but it's happened to me when I've had to work late on occasion. A young dog should do fine, but I'd get up really early and let him out a couple of times. Could you possibly have a friend or family member stop by and let him out? Or hire a professional pet sitter to come over for a visit? www.petsitters.org

I'm a big fan of crates, but 12 hrs seems kind of long. Especially b/c dogs don't like to go to the bathroom in their crates, so if he did have to go to the bathroom, he might be very upset with himself for having to go in his space. Maybe you could put his crate in the bathroom and put paper down, so he could stay in a small tiled area where clean up is easy, but he would still be able to sleep in his crate, which is what he probably prefers anyway. I have a chihuahua/dachshund mix and she loves her crate too.

We had a pair of dachshunds once, a female raised from a pup and a male stray we took in. The female was excellent with adults, children and other dogs (she was a compulsive cat chaser and an excellent mouser as well), about as close to the perfect dog you can imagine. The stray was great with children but not so good with adults (he was a biter). The answer is, you don't know the dog's history, only what "the lady" says, so you be sure to supervise the dog closely with your children, and limit their contact with him for a few days, the transition will be stressful for the poor guy. That doesn't mean you need to coddle him -- to the contrary, it's important to establish a routine; dogs thrive when provided with structure.

Don't you have a small area that you can confine him to rather than leave him in a crate? Like maybe give him the run of the kitchen or a hallway so he can move around? 12 hours is a long time to leave a dog locked up.

I used to work a lot of 12 hour days before my company closed. My 2 minis had accidents in their cages when no one could come and let them out. Then I felt guilty for putting them back in there for bed. I put up a privacy fence, installed a doggy door, and put them in the enclosed back porch while I am gone. They can run in and out as they need to. I just have to check that they are not digging anywhere under the fence. Now I do not feel as guilty about having to leave them for long hours.

12 hours is too long.. 8 hours is the maximum.. it is different for your dog when he goes in and can leave voluntarily on his own.. but locked in durring the day for 12 hours is too long.. perhaps a neighbour can check him part way through - a neighbour kid? or you can find some way of taking him with you on those days?
I am sure there is somebody who can help - you just havent found that person yet.. even a professional (bonded) pet sitter in your area.. they usually charge per visit so one visit on those days would be enough...
