Can you be more specific about what you are trying to do? You say you have a 3 terminal PLUG. That is the plug on the end of a cord for an appliance? There is no reason to have a 4 wire cord with a 3 wire plug. A dryer or range cord comes with a plug installed, so I wouldn't think that is what you are asking. If you have a 3 wire RECEPTACLE in your house for a range or dryer, you need to get a 3 wire CORD/PLUG to hook to the ranger or dryer. If I haven't guessed what you are trying to do, give more information.

You should really get an electrician if you aren't familiar with electrical work.

Red / black to top 2 terminals and white or green to single bottom. You need not use all four wires but make certain that the line (power source) side of the circuit is wired the same.
..ei.. if white is bottom of plug make sure white is grounded in panel. Red and black are of course your live wires which go on separate phases in the panel or to a 240 double breaker. Hope this helps.

If it is for aan electric dryer you wire the black to the left, the white and green go in the middle and the red goes on the right.

stunning decision is to modify the plug, the three prong outlet does no longer have a floor, includes 2 hots and a impartial. turn off the circuit breaker on your dryer outlet and take off the outlet, with any success there's a floor cord contained in the outlet field. If no longer, you would possibly want to easily want to get a clean cord. i might want to rewire the dryer circuit to get a floor, yet this will be an exceedingly perplexing aspect to do, searching on how the cord is administered and the shape of your domicile.
