This question has been asked many times, so I've formulated my standard answer. Here it is:

Picture quality of plasma is brighter, better color, better blacks than LCD. (There is something about looking directly at glowing phosphors!)

Sharpness is the same for equivalent pixel counts. Some newer LCDs have 1080 x 1920 resolution, most plasmas still in the 720 x 1280 range.

Plasma is heavier and uses more power than flat panel LCD.

There are reports that plasmas are not as reliable or they don't last as long, but that is no longer true with the latest models. Plasma phosphors dim slowly over time (but not as fast as CRT phosphors); but direct view LCDs use flourescent lamps which also dim and eventually burn out (some are replaceable). Projection LCD sets have bulbs of limited life, but are replaceable and the lifetime is a few thousand hours of viewing.

Plasmas are subject to burn-in. A stationary image left on the screen for a long time could produce a permanent ghost image. The most risk is when viewing a lot of 4:3 ratio pictures (non-HD), which are displayed with vertical dark areas on the left and right to fill in the wide screen. There are ways to minimize this, however. many sets have a "stretch" mode which widens the picture to fill the whole screen. This could also be a problem with extended playing of video games if there is a background image that remains stationary.

Plasmas come in larger sizes, although large flat panel LCDs are coming out, but they are expensive. LCD projectors can be 70".

LCD contrast and brightness can be reduced when viewing from off-center (both flat and projector, but sets will vary).

LCD
-------
Pros:
-Low energy consumption
-High sharpness
-Good colour reproduction

Cons:
-Viewing angle (though this gets better all the time)
-Contrast (bad black levels since light is always passing through each pixel)
-Dead pixels on delivery (seems less of a problem these days)
-Crappy refresh rate on cheaper models which causes "ghosting" on fast moving images.

PLASMA
------------
Pros:
-Vibrant, bright and good viewing angle. Good for daytime viewing.
-Good black levels improve contrast
-Generally better refresh rates than many LCDs
-Name sounds "cool" to other consumers and casual techies

Cons:
-Consumes lots of energy and expels lots of heat
-Sharpness tends not to be as good as LCD
-Burn-in is a problem since phosphors are used

For both technologies, the advantages are that the display is very thin and flat making it ideal for wall mounting or use in rooms where space is a concern. Both can display very nice looking images as well. The downside is that the screens are generally more fragile that CRT tubes making them less shock resistant as a lot of thin glass layers are used in construction. Also, a lot of cheaper brands have flooded the market with "HDTV Ready" monitors/tvs that are not true HD resolution (720 or 1080) but rather scale a HD signal to fit the display which will usually have a lower native resolution. Some people do not mind this and only want the glamour of having a flat panel display. Still, when shopping for a HDTV make sure to get concrete numbers when it comes to the physical or native resolution of the screen so that you don't contract a case of buyers' remorse.

Cheers.

PS, for reference:

HDTV Resolutions:
720i or 720p (1280 x 720 pixels)
1080i or 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixels)

DVD Resolution:
480i or 480p (720 x 480 pixels) [widescreen]

Standard TV (480 visible horizontal lines of resolution) [4:3
aspect]

*i/p stands for interlaced/progressive. Look it up on google if you're confused about this.

LCD doesn't have the burn in factor if left on a certain screen. The refresh rate for a LCD is slower that plasma. So if you are looking for something quick you may go with the plasma.

plasma has better color, but is heavier and more expensive.LCD is very lite ,very bright and less expensive. the diference in picture quality is no longer visible. I would go with LCD.best ones are Hitachi,Sony,Panasonic, but you could get a 42inch 1080p Westinghouse for under 2000. at bestbuy.
