That is to say if you believe that angels are absent of free-will, a gift God only gave to Man. Angels only know the love of God and their sole, defining purpose is to serve The Father. If that is true, that would mean, for an angel, if God told an angel to take one step forward and they took one and a tenth steps forward than they have broken faith with their creator. Seems stringent and cold but absolutely necessary...for an angel I'd imagine. So we take Lucifer...God says WATCH mankind and he SPEAKS to mankind so now he's broken the one rule God had for his angels which was "Do EXACTLY what I say do" and he is expelled from Heaven. Being an Angel, he still loves God. Loving God is all he knew, and we all know the worst kind of behavior comes from thwarted love, especially if we believe what we did was from a good place. Satan told a blatant truth not knowing God meant "die" in another way. Let's not go feeling sorry for poor Satan, but could this be a possibility?

He was God's son too, because angels are sons of God, as we are, because God created us all. Saying that, yes, satan did love God. But if you love your creator, you would keep His commandments. The angels are ran like an army. God's army. There is no room for dissention in the ranks. It would create an uprising, and it did. Satan was beautiful. The most beautiful angel, and he wanted to be God.
This was not going to be tolerated. If he was allowed to do it others would think that they could follow suit. Look how man is. So satan and the other sons of God that were on his side, were cast out of heaven. When angels fall, they are ugly. When man falls, he loses eternal life, which is what he had in Eden. That's why God didn't say that they couldn't eat from the eternal life tree, cause they already had that. It was the good and evil tree. Part of that punishment was for man to die in his day, and Adam died at 930.

As an angel, his name was Lucifer. After the fall, his name was satan, meaning adversary, and that's what he is to God.

Interesting i know this is a christian view on satan but if i may tell you about the Islamic view on Satan maybe it can help.
God created many beings, in Islam we believe that God created Angels, Jinns (made of smoke/fire), and humans (last). In Islam Satan is known as Iblis a Jinn. he was the oldest of the Jinns, very knowledgable and he was the teacher of the Angels. Now God created man but when God commanded to bow before Adamn Iblis refused, and arrogantly said, i am made of fire, he is made of dirt i am more superior. For that he was to be bansihed to Hell but before he was to be punished he asked that to be put on Earth so that he may tempt Man and show God that they can be disobedient. God accepted and said that those that follow satan will suffer the same fate, and those who follow God will achieve Heaven.
Now many scholars have argued that satan felt no one was worthy of prostration other than God and hence that was why he didnt. Also if God is all knowing did he not know what Satan was to do? could it be said then that is why he was created, his role was evil?
i hope this provides some intrigue..

Yes, the Angels are servants to God, but no free will?

Satan was God's highest Angel. But Satan had an "ego" and believed he was better than God.

Somewhat like a spoiled child, Satan and the Angels that followed him rebelled against God, and they were cast from heaven as a result.

No, I don't believe Satan loved God "too much", I don't believe he loved Him at all. He was, however, in love with himself.

In my opinion, he was also jealous of God and His power, and he wanted it for himself.

It turned out to be his undoing.

In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.

The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of God plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.

Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.

Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.

Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

Satan or Lucifer as he was known in heaven was considered the original third of the Godhead; you might can say he was the "minister of music" who could sing in eight octaves; shoot, I can imagine how that sounded; heavenly. anyway, if he had loved God "too much" as you said, we wouldn't be here asking this question; See, like someone said earlier, pride came into being, and though he caused a rebellion and a third of the angels to follow him, God didn't cause harm to come to them because HE loved them and as you mentioned, free will played a part in this as well; which is a big difference as to us. if we were in charge, we'd probably make a person fear us, but not God; He loves us so that we can use our rationale to come into the knowledge of obeying and loving Him; The Bible speaks of God not willing for anyone to perish.. well so it was with Lucifer and his rebellion.

I think Satan is just an angel/god who's doing his job. His duty is to test all the humans in someway or another.
