I have a 8 yr old male & a 2 yr old female. They have been living together since I got my little cat. They are both inside cats and have never been outside. Until yesterday... my male escaped and was outside for a couple of hours. I finally found him and brought him back in and now my girl is hissing and growling (and all that mean stuff cats are capable of) towards my male. They are literally best friends and have always been together but now she is acting like hes a stranger cat that wants to hurt her. My male is getting very upset (his feelings are getting hurt BAD) I mean this is his best friend thats trying to fight him now. Any suggestions?

Alpha. Since your female is getting older, this may be intimidating the male who is and was the alpha of the home. Your female may be trying to take over the home because she is getting older. It all comes down to who is king/queen of the home. She's getting bigger and may want to take over.

Take them both outside in their cages/ pet carriers. Face the carriers towards one another. After a few minutes, bring the cages near your home door. Face the carriers towards one another again and open the doors, so that they can both come out from the cages and re-enter the house together. Make sure both cats enter the house simultaneously. Don't let one in before the other is ready.

This might help. Good luck.

He picked up a smell that is unfamiliar with the female.
I would try a good cat shampoo. Brush your female cat then brush the male with the same brush to mix the odors together. It might help, because cats rub on us to put their odor on us. Try rubbing your females mustaches and then rubbing it on the male. Try to mix the sents as much as you can so she can start to recognise him as her freind.
good luck!

You might try the Feliway plugin or spray. Perhaps he smells different from being outside, you can take a washcloth and rub it on the kitty who stayed in and them rub it on kitty who went outside so he smells like her again.

It might sound silly, but he smells "funny". Give them time, they will rediscover each other.
