I don't necessarily have an answer, although once upon a time I belonged to the category you just described. I was a far right wing, religious, hard core red-white-blue patriotic republican. I happily joined the military to fight for the american way and all of that. Now, don't get me wrong, joining the military and fighting for this country were the best decesisions I ever made, and I would never quit that. But, I am now aware of a lot of ignorance when it comes to political agenda.
One day, I woke up and realized that for me, religion was bull. You could stand back, and if you take religion out of life, why bother with wars, racism, etc. I thought America was about being a strong christian person. Then I finally started thinking about how this country was based on religious freedom, not the freedom to be force-fed christians. I realized, that all of the "honest corn-fed republican values" I had adopted, were not necessarily protecting my rights, but ionstead slowly taking them away in the name of the greater good. Christians have it in their heads that this is their country, not a free-country. Most I know won't even ackowledge the different beliefs that our founding fathers had. Being free men, not free-christians. Sorry, I didn't actually answer your question, I just had to rant for a minute!! Long live America, and Long live Freedom.
I wanted to add in reply to the comments that America was founded by Christians as a Christian country. If you do a little homework you will see that a number of our founding fathers were Freemasons. One of the key principles of Freemasonry is that you must accept and believe in a higher power, not in God per se, but 'some higher power'. So, if you believe in God, and I believe in Satan, you agree that is ok. Isn't the first commandment to have no other gods? By pledging to an organization that is devoted to the general fraternization of different Gods, doesn't that go in the face of Christianity? And this whole 'In God we Trust Crap" was only added in the late 50s. Just because Eisenhower believed it, he was kind enough to feed it down everyone elses throats. Way to go. Believe what we think, or we will persecute you because you don't. Oh, wait, that was the Nazi's. Or was it?
Sorry Grandreal, but this country was not "founded on the principles of the bible, IN GOD WE TRUST!"
It was founded on the ability to be able to escape persecution for your beliefs (or lack there of) and that crappy "In God we Trust" was added by Eisenhower in 1956 during the heart of the great Red Fear.
As long as you are worshiping imaginary Gods I need to say my prayers to Santa and go to bed. hehe Right wing Christians are funny.

There is nothing wrong with being patriotic. When we all have lost love for our country, we will lose the will to fight for our country because we have nothing to fight for. The patriots fight to keep this country worth loving. The United States the is greatest country in the history of civilization. Why do you think we have so many people coming here! Because of our many varieties of Pringles from which to choose? Maybe the come here for Yanni. NO! They come hear because of the freedom and opportunities that the freedom allows. And it's the reason everyone blessed enough to be born here stays. Being Christian has little to do with patriotism. (There is also nothing wrong with being a Christian)

Because we are lucky enough to have freedom of religion in the USA. AND because our founding fathers were Christians. Of course Christians (the most popular religion in the USA) would be the most likely people to be super-patriotic here. Besides, in some other countries you can get tortued and murdered (slowly & painfully) because you are Christian. So, that makes Christian's feel even luckier.

MANIFEST DESTINY - look it up - was actually an article of faith of the US gov't around 100 years ago - they really believed they had been gifted the right to go around the world and fix it as they saw fit. It's still going on, of course, and now with the Republicans owning so many media outlets, they determine what issues get in the news (there's an expose written on this media machine called Blinded by the Right). Nowadays, everyone is fixated on the War on Terror, or Muslim Terrorists, even though millions are dying of malaria, AIDS, war, and poor drinking water in Africa, the biggest threat to the world is terror, according to these news outlets. Yes, terrorists are bad and need to be squashed like bugs, but why do they get more airtime than the warlords in Africa? Because America is on a Crusade against those pinko liberals, brown heathens, and Allah-worshiping infidels who threaten the re-establishment of the state of Israel, which needs to occur in order for the Rapture to take place. Armageddon is not fantasy to this administration, it's frickin' self-fulfilling policy!
I read in Harper's once that a college professor in California heard one of his freshman say, "I always thought that Jesus was American." AHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAAAA!!!!!!!!

For the same reason a dollar bill says:" In God we trust".
This "God" is definitely a Christian one. The patriots that found the USA were Christians. Or not?

I know super-patriotic people who are both religious and nonreligious. Most people who are patriotic or superpatriotic know the history of this country and the sacrifices made for freedom. They are people who give a damn.

when you love God you are led by him. I'm not sorry for for being patriotic because i have no choice in it. God guides the steps of his people and his Spirit leads them in prayer. America was founded by God fearing people, the real question is why do people like you want to destroy America?
