Too cool? I don't know if I would use that exact term, although I understand how video pictures on TV may produce that question. I prefer to use the sentence...isn't the MOAB; very effective. Then yes.

The Massive Ordnance Air Blast (USAF nomenclature GBU-43/B)
originally designed for psych ops...put the fear of God, not Allah, into the Iraqis and to make them desert or surrender.

Considered the single most devastating bomb in terms of yield and blast area in the US arsenal that is not nuclear. At 21,000 lbs; 18,700lbs of that being tutorial (H6) explosives targeting an array of battlefield targets.

The MOAB can target large troop formations, hardened bunkers and deep buried targets (command, control & communications, leadership HQs, ammo depots as examples). I would also throw in large are of dispirsed tanks or artillery pieces.

By the way. Currently in development (which probably means in is already in testing at the least) is the 30,000 pound BIG BLU (Bomb Live Unit)...whoa. This new bomb is also non-nuclear and is being developed by Boeing's Phantom Division. It is known as a Massive Ordanance Penetrator (MOP); a Direct Strike Hard Target weapon. The goal, actually the requirementis to have this MOP penetrat down to 200 feet which is deeper that any current nuclear bunker blaster.

Now, in terms of the video we might see some day (soon), isn't the MOP too cool?

And to Charles D...we have spoken 1 or 2 times before so if I may comment on your observations? True, delivered by a slow moving C130 cargo plane. But add AWAC and fighter coverage, etc to provide protection. And yes, there aren't that many targets that warrent this time of weapon but when the need arises....best to have the option available.

well, it's not very practical or useful since it has to be carried by a cargo plane. There aren't that many kinds of targets that warrants that kind of explosion yet are in an area safe for flying a big slow cargo aircraft over. Its this sort of "cool toys" mentality that causes the AF to waste so much money
