I'm a Christian and I'm grieving when I see the answers I have seen to several comments relating to abortion.
How is it NOT hypocritical to say, we revere and believe that all babies start at conception, and post a picture of a baby in the womb as the symbol of right to life. But if the baby is raised by the mother who cannot support it and chooses to raise that child, we say that the government should not help the child (because it costs taxes) and the church and Christians have absolutely no obligation to help these children with basic necessities to have a decent quality of life? How can we sit there and say that if a woman makes her bed she should lie in it, but she cannot destroy that life, but yet, we say she does not have any right to help so she can raise that child properly?
As Christians, called by God to be witnesses in the world, how can we say this stance is NOT hypocritical? And then we wonder why these single mothers turn away from religion???

To those of you responding, THANK YOU! I've just had several responses to my questions where people state the only solution is adoption. And several who said taxes should not be used.
I'm sorry if I generalized (my pet peeve on these boards) because I know that there are Christians who do care.
Thank you for pointing out that a lot of Chrisitans do care as seen in these posts.

Yes, we are called to be witnesses to the world, and I agree with what you are saying to a degree. I make no excuse for abortion. at the same time , I have no trouble with the government HELPING a struggling mother- but not supporting her. The government shoud be teaching her how to educate herself, get a decent job and live within her means - financially supporting her for a time as long as she is willing to make an effort to better her circumstances. Too many times moms are having baby after baby, totally dependent on welfare and not taking care of her kids. Unfortunately the government encourages this as in many states your welfare is cut off as soon as you start doing a little better for yourself but are not yet on oyur own two feet. I am thankful they have great programs where I live now. I dont mind paying whatever taxes to help single moms go to school, pay for childcare and foodstamps when I know they are working towards becoming successful and productive members of society and their children have a better chance of not ending up in the same boat they were in. I will pay taxes , babysit for free, prepare meals and go out of my way to support this effort. Where I used to live there were a lot of no job, no education welfare families with caddilacs and dirty, unfed children running around, parents trading food stamps for drugs, etc.- That is what I have a problem paying for- it is not 'christian' to enable people to be slothful and nonproductive, not seeking to better themselves and be a burden on society.

Please note that this is my opinion, I ask none of you to believe this but I share it with you:
Everyone has a right to life. If a woman gives birth to a child that she knows she cannot support, then the best solution is to put it up for adoption. And where are we told that the government shouldn't help the child because of taxes? There is nothing wrong with taxes. "Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God." The church and Christians have an obligation to help all people. We are all called to help each other.

You are mixing politics and religion. They are both volatile topics that lead to strong feelings. I cannot speak for anyone but myself and the church that I attend. I have not heard anyone from my church say that a mother who cannot support her family (or a man, or a couple for that matter) should not get the help of those who can afford it. I have never heard someone from my church say that our taxes should not go to help such persons out.
Our church also has a special fund, taken as a separate offering, which is used specifically for such cases as this, as well as other situations where a person or family is in financial straits and needs assistance. I will not say that this fund has an overabundance of support, but it is faithfully supported and many people benefit from it.
I am sorry that you have experienced or seen situations regarding this topic that have caused you such pain. I agree that we do not care for widows and orphans, which should be expanded (in my view) to include single parent (strongly predominately single mothers) who desperately need our help.
Keep caring, do not allow your heart to be hardened, and keep shouting from the mountains. You might get hoarse, but some will hear you. I did.

There are so many groups and agencies that devote their lifes work to helping mothers and children in need. And like it or not some of you, there is government help, welfare and food stamps and medicaide for those who need it and qualify. Not to mention so many church organizations that help women and children. There are far more helpers than you realize and this is not a hypocritical stance. There is childcare offered to help the young mothers finish school if that is needed, help IS out there.

I don't know whom you are speaking of, but it is not the Church I am familiar with. We have a group here called Aid To Women. They council unwed mothers before, during and after the birth. They provide food, clothing, shelter and other needs. They are financially supported by local churches and individuals. I know of no Christians, Christian organizations or churches who believe single mothers should be denied help.

I know quite a few single mothers who get help from the Government and the Church I attend. I do not follow how you can equate murder (abortion) and the not having the money to raise a child. Have you ever heard of adoption? Thinking before you have sex with someone? I am not against single mothers, I have a friend who is one, I am just against the notion that we either let them murder or pay for their child.

there are outreach programs to assist women in raising children, unfortunately there are not enough...
How can we as Christians not teach about moral responsibility?
I agree that it is a terrible thing when a woman is raising a child on her own. It shouldn't happen at all. But, MEN should be behaving responsibly as well, by not getting women pregnant out of wedlock in the first place.

You are right, as a Christan it hurts to see how people claim to be a child of God and be conformed to this world. It is time to start acting Jesus teaches us. The church should be taking care of orphans and widows instead of spending money on a big fancy church. People think a fancy looking church will bring people in when it is us that needs to be us talking and witnessing to people.

I don't think there are too many Christians that would not want to help a mother in need, we do many charities for children and offer our time. The problem comes in when the mother or anyone else relies on the government to help them for every little thing instead of trying to help themselves

People are often unreasonable, illogical and self-centered;
Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you
of selfish, ulterior motives;
Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some
false friends and some true enemies;
Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you;
Be honest and frank anyway.
What you spend years building,
someone could destroy overnight;
Build anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness,
they may be jealous;
Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, people will
forget tomorrow,
Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have, and
it may never be enough;
Give the world the best you've got ... anyway.
You see, in the final analysis, it is
between you and God,
It never was between you and them anyway..
Mother Theresa
A very enlighthening point...but my encouragement is, continue to love GOD anyway.May your grieve be answered in prayers.God bless you.
