There are many statues all around of a fat man laughing. Is there any significance to that statue?

He is called "Hotei" and I think he is not really a representation of Siddhartha Gautama, the most famous Buddha. He comes from Taoist tradition and is a God of Luck, I think. I guess if you obtain luck, you will be laughing with delight.

Some one's idea of making money, It's not true Buddha. He might even look like Chinese, but we all know Buddha was an Indian, born in India. Someone is making us laughing stock, all the way to bank.

The big belly that He has contains the sufferings of all the living beings . He is not a fat man . The laughing style of Him is a gesture of Happiness from the deep down of his heart . This noble being is a Boddhisatva and the thus come one Buddha .
This Buddha is given the Name Maitreya Buddha . His coming to the human world is not for the benefit of Himself but for the benefit of us who are still in this world facing so many sufferings .
The word Maitreya means loving kindness ( Metta in Pali language ) . So , we can see from the statue carved , the image represents a very kind and jolly person .

the fat laughing Buddha was a monk that loved children and was always happy , with stories to tell, he was not indian.

Wouldn't you be laughing too if you have reach enlightenment?Maybe he's telling us to lighten up a bit at times. When you're feeling stress or depressed, just look at him and he helps to ease your sufferings.
