This GSD site states that the ears needed taping when the pup was younger, but there is little hope now..this is a good site for GSD ears> http://www.leerburg.com/tapingears.htm
This site says you can get them up as late as 12 months! > http://showcase.netins.net/web/royalair/eartaping.htm
More good tips on ears> http://showcase.netins.net/web/royalair/eartaping.htm
that last one was for long haired GSD..so perhaps is the best for you..It does say that the old line of long haired GSDs have more ear -standing problems

Hi,
Even if she is purebred doesn't always mean that their ears are going to stand. She might have what they call soft ears. Also if her ears are heavy it might have effected them, where they won't stand. You can always try taping them. I think you have until she is 18 months old to know if they will ever stand. My German Shepard's ears didn't fully stand until he was 6 months old. Once in awhile they will be floppy for a day then are back up the next day. Every German Shepard is different than the other. Even if they came from the same parents. Love her for who she is, not for what her ears aren't doing. Also are you making sure she has a lot of chew toys? Chewing helps the ear muscles.

Hi,
It sounds like she doesn't come from the greatest stock. I dont mean to say that she is isn't a GREAT dog (cuz I am sure she is) but sometime, some dogs have ears that wont stay up, and in a dog that should have erect ears it is often either not taping early enough or poor genetics that causes them to be floppy. I have seen this MANY times. Unfortunately she is too old to try anything at this point, the cartilage in the ear is already formed in the shape that they are now. At young ages (~5-6 mos) you can tape them up (like great danes or boxers) and that can work but now you will have to settle for a very cute floppy eared shepard! I hope that this helped and your dog is VERY cute!

My 4 yr.old shepherd has one floppy ear too.Sometimes they won't stand and it's as simple as that.
We have a friend who had one he paid $800.00 for and hers did'nt stand till she was 18mos.
You can tape her ear around a toilet paper roll and stick a cone around her neck while you're gone so she can't get the ear unwrapped. And when it is unwrapped rub it gently between thumb and fingers to get blood moving thru it and help the cartilage grow thicker. But don't get too upset if it never stands.I think the floppy ear gives my dog character.I still rub his ear constantly but the hope it'll ever stand is long gone.

Well, she probably is a mix. Unless she has papers, she is not proven to be purebred. You may have been scammed into thinking she was purebred. That is why the dog was cheap. She can make a fine per though. Just spay her so there are not anymore poorly bred puppies!!!!!
If you have AKC papers that say it is a purebred, I would call the breeder and ask why you are having this problem!!! Remember, AKC papers are only as good as the person filling them out!!!! They can be fudged as well as anything else!!!!!!!!!!

Purebred does NOT automatically mean CORRECT or Show/breeding quality!!!! Only a few(15-20%) ARE!
You paid for PET STUFF & that's what you GOT!
Bad ears, bad coat...& whatever OTHER *FAULTS* she has.

I believe the dogs ears should have been fixed as a newborn pup.

most dogs have naturally flappy ears, the ear flaps protect the inner ear structures from water and most bugs. to have the dog's ears stand up, you have to take the dog to the vet and have them surgically altered.
