The president nominates them and the Senate confirms the nomination.

Article II Section 2 of the Constitution says: The president shall have power, "by and with the advice and consent of the Senate ... to appoint ... judges of the Supreme Court".

The House of Representatives is not directly involved in the process.

Pay more attention in Civics class & you would know the President nominates new Justice & Congress grills them & then Congress confirms them to the Supreme Court.
The only close vote was Justice Clarence Thomas 52-48.

You do not need to be a lawyer to be on the Supreme Court but it helps. According to the Constitution, the President makes the appointment and the Senate must confirm by a simple majority. The demographics of the current roster of Supreme Court Justices are interesting. There is one African American, one woman and five Catholics.

When a vacancy happens, the President recommends him and the Congress confirms him, the senate if I remember right. It has to go through both before a supreme court justice is appointed.
