I've never tried Linux but want to. I've been unable to find it in the local pirate shops. can I download it from the net anywhere??

No need to pirate it... it's free!

There are many distributions to choose from. Check out www.centos.com or www.ubuntu.com

You haven't found it in pirate shops because Linux is an open source, freely distributed Operating System, so there are countless number of "versions" of Linux. I suggest you download Ubuntu, which is very user-friendly.
