TRADITION!!!
Man, there is nothing like having a stressful day and saying to yourself, "At least I have off on Wednesday." As Annie said, "You're only a day away."
I agree with Huskymom's answer. If I told my staff that they had a choice between working Wednesday's or Friday's, I think they would all prefer to have Wednesday's off. Once you get used to it, it's hard to go back. We can actually get "stuff" done in the real world.

Not all are closed on Wednesday, here in Indiana most offices are closed on Friday. Which makes more sense because then we have a long weekend. But dont get mad at us because we only work 4 days a week. It is hard on our backs and hands, so if you like your dentist and hygienist, encourage them to take it easy so you can see them for a long time!
Plus how else would we make appointments?
It used to be really nice having Fridays off because I could go out and shop and it wasnt busy, now around me at least, it seems NOONE works on Friday! It is just as busy as Saturday! Oh well!

They might be at another office that they work at.... or some even prefer to take the day or half the day off in order to catch up on checking up on patient charts, make treatment options etc... this is very very very common.
Remember, that in order to actually make money, these guys or gals have to actually do the work - and at least once a week they take time to see what needs to be do to their patients and read about what patients have been referred out - and how they are doing (the patient) and what needs to be done next.. sounds confusing, but on a normal day when they are with patients consistently each day, with interruptions with phone calls, patient questions and so much more! - they take time to stop, sit and think.
oh and dentists do not go to medical school - as per the silly answerer above me... in fact, it is more difficult to get into dental school - why? because they make a ton of money, and so many people want to get in... therefore, you need the grades, which are equivalent to that of a physician . How do I know? I have many friends who are physicians, and many many times they wish they went to dental school - just for the money they make and less politics. Also, physicians know NOTHING about teeth, therefore if you need a root canal or filling, a physician cannot and will not help you. That is why they are a 'doctor of teeth'.

I personally have never worked for a dentist that is closed on Wednesdays, but I have worked where they are closed on Fridays.
The reasons why they choose to close a day during the week are:
#1: It is very difficult to catch up on the behind the scenes stuff if you are seeing patients 5 days a week. There is maintenance on the equipment to be done, supplies to order, phone calls to make, charts to document in, and alot of other stuff that cant be done with tons of patients in the office.
#2: One dentist I talked to said that he has worked very hard in his career as a dentist to get to the point where he is skilled enough to be able to make just as much money and see just as many patients and do just as good of work, in 4 days, as in 5.
And last, for anyone who has every worked in the dental field, it is very stressing and there is not usually time between patients to take care of personal matters, at least not in a busy office. This day off during the week gives staff members, as well as the dentist himself, time to take care of phone calls, dr's appt. for their kids, parent-teacher meetings, and a number of other things that can only be done Monday thru Friday during normal business hours. These are usually personal things that can not be done during the 5 minutes between patients. I usually don't even get 5 minutes between patients. As soon as I start to make a phone call to my bank or my childs doctor, I get a call over my intercom telling me that my next patient is here. When I leave for work at 7:00 am and don't get home till 6:30 pm, these days off during the week really help me take care of stuff I normally would have to try to sqeeze in on my lunch hour, which I only actually get about 3 days a week.

I know most pediatricians are also closed or close earlier on Wednesdays, too. I asked my daughter's doctor one time and he said thats when he plays golf. I thought he was joking, but who knows?
