I'll be going to LA this september. Hoping to spend as little travel time to go to the canyon as possible.

Don't be in a rush to see one of the most beautiful places in the world! Get a motel in Flagstaff and visit some of the ancient Indian ruins at Walnut Canyon, Sunset Crater National Park (extinct volcano), or the Indian reservations to the NE. If you have never been in this part of the world, it is worth the time.

Catch a flight to Vegas and rent a car at the airport. You'll be at the Canyon South entrance in about 2.5 hours and get to see some great sights along the way (Boulder Dam, Lake Meade). You need a car to tour the canyon in any depth.

The other approach is from Phoenix - about 3 hours, but you can come back through Sedona Canyon, which is pretty awesome too. There is basically only one road from either city to the Canyon so directions are easy to pick up with the car rental.

Depending where you are in LA, forget the 10, use the 15 north to the 40 east. From there you can get a train in Williams (Grand Canyon Railroad) or just drive up to the Canyon on SR 64 north.
You can stay in Flagstaff, Tusayan or Williams. From LA you are looking at about a nine hour drive if you miss traffic.
It is a beautiful place and you should try to spend as much time there as possible. There is a small airport there, but Vegas may be cheaper, but you'll still spend a few hours driving. There are bus tours that zip you through the canyon and back to Vegas or LA.
In short there are no fast trips there, so evaluate if you want to spend 16-18 hours there and back or just stay in LA and see the Grand Canyon on another trip.

Seeing the Grand Canyon is not a particularly easy endeavor in terms of time or effort. Depending on how much time you have to spend in Southern California, you can take a couple of different approaches:

If your visit to SoCal includes some time visiting Las Vegas, you can drive or fly to Vegas and while there book a sightseeing flight to the Grand Canyon. I believe there are also helicopter tours that may even let you get out and take a look.

If you are more inclined to drive, plan on a somewhat long drive out I-10 to the canyon. For many people this is somewhat anti-climatic as you spend hours in a car, get out, look at the canyon, take some pictures, then get back in your car and drive someplace else. It usually works best if you plan to see some of the other sites in the general vicinity.

There is also a train called rails to the rim that will take you there. It is more of an experience than just driving yourself.

Happy Viewing!
