I moved from New Orleans where everyone called it a "cold drink" or a coke- someone would go int oa restaurant and order a 'coke' then the waitress would have to ask what kind because 'coke' covered just about anything carbonated and sweet. I am in washington state now and everyone calls it pop.
I generally just ask for it by the brand name of exactly what I want and if I am talking about all drinks in general, I say soft drink.

My family is from California, but I was raised in Oregon (since six months). I call a soft drink a soda, or Coke (and that's for everything).

The real term for the "beverage" or "soft drink" is Soda Pop.
I've researched this before.
Ohio, Cincinnati: pop
Tennessee, Gatlinburg: coke (if you ask for coke, you will be asked "what kinda coke")
For the most part, it is mostly referred to as soda.
