I've got one at the moment, but the ointments that are supposed to heal it quicker don't really work so much in my opinion; so, I was looking for some alternatives.
The only alternative I can think of is to go to the pub, get involved in a brawl, and hope that some fellow hits me on the lip with a broken glass bottle which cuts the part with the cold sore off.
I would imagine that's sort of painful; so, I would appreciate any suggestions or alternatives that you know of. Thank you!

Apply a paste made of cornstarch and water. This would help relieve the pain, but your going to have wait 7-10 days for it to go away. Be patient and DON'T TOUCH IT.

Dr Whittaker's Guide to Natural Healing recommends a product called Herpilyn by Enzymatic Therapy. Chek your local health food stores, Tea Tree oil kills any bug you put it on and might be worth a try. Dilute it with some olive oil if it gives irritation. Some people take Lysine 500 mg tablets 3 times a day on an empty stomach which helps in some cases.

go to the drugstore and get some abreva - it is a lip balm for treating cold sores, and takes a couple days to work, but it starts getting rid of the pain after a few applications. if youre really concerned about the cold sore go to your doctor and ask for some topical zovirax ointment (which is stronger than abreva) and that should take care of it really quickly.

There is a medication - Acyclovir or Zovirax - that will take it
away in a few days instead of a couple of weeks.
Your doctor has to prescribe it for you, it's worth it.
I do believe cutting it with a glass bottle will just make it
appear bigger.

I had a big one the other day and went swimming at the resort that we were at and it was a salt water pool. I woke up the next day and it was COMPLETELY gone. I could not believe it. I have had cold sores all my life and they always last for a week. The next time I see my doctor, I will ask her about it. It was truly Incredible.

abreva worked pretty well for me
maybe ask someone in a pharmacy or something for some reliable product, or if worst comes to worst, go to the doctor
anyhow, avoid kissing- it spreads cold sores

Zovirax can prevent the sore from getting bigger but eventually nothing can be done for outbreaks. It is something that people have to live with.

Tea Tree essential oil applied topically to the sore. If you end up ingesting some, it's OK. Tastes like crap, but won't kill you.

you know cold sores suck and medicine says that it makes it go away quicker and i don't think so. Please don' t get in a fight yeah you might get rid of the sore but then you get a scar so i suggest that you do not do that.

Hm. I tend to fall in the "avoid getting herpes" camp of cold sore treatment. I've been lucky so far.
