my dog is a chihuahua mix and about once every few months or weeks, he has some kind of seizure. it seems as if he loses control of his legs and he starts shaking uncontrollably and dragging himself on the floor. he looks like he's dizzy cuz he limps and throws his head around bumping into the wall and stuff. he drools excessively and sometimes he barfs after. sometimes it lasts a few minutes and other times just about one minute. we treat my dog great. he gets proper food, treats, exercise, and we play with him all the time. he stays in the backyard, so could something have been exposed to him or something? could some kind of animal have given him a disease? or maybe he ate wood and grass and stuff in the yard. he eats human food too. is that a problem? what's wrong with my dog and what can we do to help him? my grandma said he just had one yesterday and it last about half an hour! i'm really getting worried!

Chihuahuas are famous for neurological disorders, mine had only a mild one, he was clinically retarded.
It could be a virus or it could be a congenital disease, there's simply no way to know. Go to your vet, and tell us what happens! He needs help ASAP, so it's good you're going.
Keep us posted with "Additional Details!" Good luck.

Sounds like your dog has epilepsy (humans get this too) and if the animal or human does not get the medication will have seizures. This is something only a Veterinarian can decide and give medication for. if it is epilepsy or some other Seizure(that's what your dog is having) disorder then it should be simple to control although it may not be able to cured of altogether. Hopefully,he has a nice dog house or shelter in the backyard and if money is a problem try some Animal Rescue Groups who help . Be careful with the human food OK to give meat for a dog is a meat eater but NEVER Real Bones for they can splinter and tear his insides. Don't wait to take your dog to the vet for seizures can weaken his heart and cause harm if he has too many and eventually they'll last longer and they could weaken him considerably to put his health in danger. Only the Vet can tell exactly what it is and prescribe the right medication. There are also mail order medicine places where a bit cheaper. Discuss this with your Vet if your dog has to take medicine for a long time.
Good luck-hope you and your dog have a long and happy life together. You sound like a real decent kid.

Your dog is having seizures. He needs to be seen by a vet ASAP. Seizures once a month or so can go untreated. When a dog starts to have them more frequent and they last longer the cause needs to be determined if possible and the dog needs to be put on anti seizure medication. There are a couple different routes to take on meds. Phenobarbital is one. The vet will want to do bloodwork to see how his organs are functioning. They will want to recheck those values every 3-6 months at first then every 6 months. They will also want to check the level of medication in his system periodically. When a dog first goes on these meds they can be quite sedated. It takes a trial and error to determine what level of medication is required to prevent seizures without having the dog sedated. He could have a brain tumor, or he could just have what is called idiopathic epilepsy. Which basically means he's elileptic and they don't know why. Just an imbalance in his brain. Get him to the vet tomorrow. Hope this helps.

Have you used any insectiside or weed control in your yard? He my have tried to eat the grass or I've also heard dandylions are bad for dogs. My dog experienced something similar a little while ago. He was really shaky and his head looked like a bobble head toy. After about a half hour he threw up. I figured out he had got a hold of an apple that had fallen off out crab apple tree just before the first snow and had sat on the yard frozen all winter.

Probably he is epileptic, and with a little patience and some medication, you can get it under control. The vet will have to take a blood test though and will ask a lot of questions about his seizures, so be sure to describe it very well, just the way you told it to us. I hope everything will be fine.

My best friends dog does the very same thing and the only thing that she can do to help her when she is having these seizures is to hold her in her arms and wait for it to pass. Funny how Nelly will go right to Lara and let her know when she is going to have one of her spells. She said her Vet told her that there is really nothing that she can do to cure the seizures.
Maybe you can find an answer, if you do please let me know, I will pass the info on to my BF. Good luck to you and your baby...

sounds just like seizure activity. Take him to the vet, he/she may prescribe phenobarbital to control them. The drug isn't usually too expensive but there is bloodwork that will need to be done ever 6 months to 1 year to monitor the levels.

Get some Pet insurance on him before you go so it won't be a pre existing condition.
He may need to be on medication for life.
In people when they have a seizure they are unresponsive. If your dog turns to you when he is having an episode it may be some other neurological condition

your dog could be epileptic. I would take him to vet and describe symptoms to him. he may be able to put him on some kind of med that will help control seizures. my mother had a dog with same problem and vet helped her.
