I say when your child goes off alone for long periods of time with friends. I am hoping my daughter doesn't start this till she is 14 or 15. I would say for sure when they can pitch in and pay for the cell phone plan or when they learn to drive. I know of a neighbor kid who is 6 and I can't see them needing one at that age!

When you think they are ready for one or they can pay the bill themselves. I spent some time over in Korea, and children of almost all ages has a cell phone. Everyone except babies. Sometimes it seemed as though they were born with a phone in hand. No pun intended.
