The books have been broken down by type. In the Old Testament, there is an orderly grouping of seventeen historical books: the Law of Moses and the historical books. (Genesis through Esther.) Next, there are five experiential books of wisdom and poetry. (Job through the Song of Solomon.) Lastly, a second group of seventeen books by Prophets. (Isaiah through Malachi.)

In the New Testament, it is broken down into three sections. These are History, Letters (or Epistles), and Prophecy.

There is great debate about when the book of Job was written and who the author was.

These are the eras that I am familiar with for when the Book of Job may have been written:

i) the patriarchal period (between 20th c. and 18th c. BC), based on the claim that Job was a contemporary of Abraham and possible author of the text

ii) no earlier than four generations after Abraham

iii) the time of Moses (c. 15th c. B.C.) and Moses may be the author

iv) the time of King David and King Solomon (late to mid-10th c. BC)

v) the time of Isaiah (c. 8th c. BC)

vi) after the Fall of Jerusalem to Babylon (c. 550 BC) during the time of exile and captivity (*this is the one I am most familair with)

vii) in the post-exilic period (5th and 4th c. BC)

And as others have noted, the books are arranged categorically (those who say that they are like chapters in a book are not exactly correct, because these are individual books, not chapters)

because it is not what happened first. the things that written first didn't necessarily happen first. Genesis is the first book, it starts out saying "In the beginning God..." Job is found later in the Bible. It starts out saying, "There was a man in the land of Uz..."

Doesn't it make sense that the Bible should start with God and talk about Job later? God came first, so we should start with God.

Even though it may have been the oldest written book, it doesnt contain revelation concerning creation. God thought it best to reveal that to Moses, presumably through visions, so everyone may know the truth.
