I was on zoloft for two of my three pregnancies with no problem. I had post-partum depression very bad after my first baby and the doctor thought it was safer to keep me on the zoloft rather than risk being depressed during pregnancy. My best friend is pregnant right now and takes thyroid medicine. Her doctor told her it is more dangerous to not take the meds. because your thyroid affects how the baby grows. As far as the St. John Wart is concerned, just because something is natural does not mean it is safe. Herbs are not regulated by the fda so be careful as to what you take. Especially if you are pregnant. Good Luck!!

If you take Synthroid, I know it's perfectly safe during pregnancy, I've had plenty of moms who took it for pregnancy and breastfeeding, it's a Category A drug, which is the safest for pregnancy. In general meds for hypothyroid are compatible with pregnancy.

It's best to avoid antidepressants during pregnancy IF you can because long term effects are unknown. However, if you are taking them, unless it's situational depression due to an event (someone died, job loss, etc) you most likely need them to feel good. So taking them during pregnancy may be necessary depending on how severe your depression is.

I'm not sure which one you are taking but I've had quite a few moms that took various SSRIs throughout pregnancy (if they needed to) and throughout lactation, although some have had to switch meds. The only one I know for sure is bad is Paxil, you may want to read this article, it has some excellent info.

I would advise against herbal medications to substitute for ones prescribed by the MD. If you do try them, don't forget to let your health care provider know.
