Probably get NJP'd (Non Judicial Punishment-I'm sure you already know that just makin sure)
He/She would would get because there's no need to file for bankruptcy. They give you enough money to support a wife, & life off base. Granted it's not a lot of money, it's enough. He can go talk to a financial advisor on base for free that will advise him how to go about fixing his financial problems. My husband went to one. You have to add up all your bills and everything (We came up with NEGATIVE 121.00 a month lol) and you go from there. It really did help us. They can also give you a loan to pay off who-ever's houndin' ya and you pay back the loan through however many years you have left (we have 2 years to pay it back (allotment) so the payments are SUPER cheap.

We're in the Army and filed almost 10 years ago. Nothing happened to us. We were paying our bills and doing alright, then I got pregnant and had to quit work because I almost lost the baby. It didn't take long for creditors to start calling and threatening. We went to a lawyer and told him our situation. He said he could work things out with them without the whole court thing (bankruptcy). It didn't take him long to call back and say that nobody cared about our situation and we'd be better off to file. So, we did and haven't regretted it a day since. However, we kept our car payment and our DPP and a few other key accounts. That way, our credit wasn't totally destroyed. I'd say your first step should be to talk to JAG (or the Marine equivalent). They can tell you what situation that puts in with the Marines and if it's possible to file and so on.

Good luck!!

Absolutely not. Filing bancruptcy is a civil court action that is filed by the petitioner. There is no punishment by the Uniformed Services for declaring or filing bancruptcy. It may, however, impact thier job if they are required to have a security clearance.

They could face something along to lines of an Article 15 for financial irresponsibility...

Before doing that I would go through my chain or one of the on base agencies to see if there was any other route other then bankruptcy
