The saying goes that we don't learn from other people's mistakes, only our own - (well at least hopefully we do learn from our own mistakes)! Maybe you will share your story of how you have learned from someone else's mistake.

We bought a house about 10 months after we married. All we had was a living room suit and a kitchen table. We wanted to fill it with furniture and decorate instantly. Some friends of ours had done the same thing about a year before us. They were deep in debt because of wanting things right then. Then the husband lost his job and they lost their house right after we moved in ours.
We saw all the misery they had so we agreed to borrow a bedroom suit from a relative (mismatched) and buy one piece of furniture at a time for cash. Save up and buy some more. It was tough wanting so much and our house was quite naked but we were debt free (except for the mortgage). We still live like that. We buy one thing and pay it off before we buy anything else. Its been 35 years so what we buy is much bigger. Just bought 6 acres of land but paid it off in 2 years. Now when we build the land is already ours. Plus we never touch our savings. m

Sometimes, about the time I think I've learned from somebody else's mistake, I go right out and do the very same thing, or worse, and after my head quits spinning, I feel embarrassed before God for being so dumb. Maybe we do learn, but maybe that's not all it takes to not make the same mistake or worse. We all grow up thinking we can do better than our parents. Now I just ask God if I could be anywhere near as good as my parents were. And I think that wish will keep growing stronger all the rest of my life, even though if you were to see my life as others do, you might not see all the things I did wrong, but they're there. Where did things go wrong. I know, but I don't know. Just keep your eyes forward to God, as in Jesus our Christ, and pray He keeps you close. God Bless you.

I have two older brothers that moved out of the home before me (they're older... I was still in High School when the 1st moved out). The oldest brother chose to spend money on whatever he wanted. Didn't save a dime. Had a financial crisis (car broke down, and he couldn't afford to get it fixed). This has happened many times over the past 8 or so years (he's 28 now). He still hasn't learned to save money or to spend it wisely at least.

I have learned from this. He still owes my mom probably 1,000's of dollars, and she knows she'll never see most of it. When I borrow money, I make sure I have a way to pay it back, if I don't, I don't borrow it. And I pay people back quickly, so I don't get myself into a hole. This has been a big issue to me, because my mom is now on disability, and he's still borrowing money from her sometimes. I can't stand this, but he is my brother and I still love him... mistakes and all.

Well i learn to question orders. I learn this from some people who use to be in the SS during world war 2. One of them lost his father in stalingrad his father was a division commander and he was working with him as a captain in the German army the the six army. The leader of the six army said to his father no German general has ever given up to an enemy. That night his father said to him "you are young try to survive this and live on" with that his father hug his son his son give him the military solute and later that night his father shot himself. The next morning the commander of the six army surrendered to the Russians he did not shoot his self. From then on that young man question orders, i learn from him because i visit Germany and i met him at a grave the grave was that of his father. In 2002 June.

from my experience, it seems to me that making mistakes is the only way u can learn and actually be CONVINCED of what u learnt...

sometimes when u view other peoplez mistakes, u say to urself that it wouldnt happen to u, or if u were in their place u would face and deal with that certain situation differently... etc...... u would probably learn, but i doubt u'd be fully convinced...

heir_to_christ,
I have two brothers and one sister, all older than me.

And I have never been married.

If that isn't learning from someone elses mistakes, I don't know what is!
