to get two things done with one action, for example, you go to the mall to return the videos you rented, and you pick up your laundry next door. You made one trip, but you got two things done.

Getting two desirable outcomes or consequences with only the effort normally required to achieve one. The second outcome may not be an unexpected bonus; there are situations when people plan to get two things done at once, and to describe that strategy they cite this example of two birds with one stone.

The closest analogy I can think of is when you try to hit a bird with a slingshot. When the stone hit the first bird and bounce off it to hit another bird, two birds were hit and fell down. So you got two birds with one stone where it normally would need two shots. Now, that may have happened because you're extremely lucky, or you may have actually analyzed the two birds' flying patterns, tested the wind, did some geometric and physics calculations and actually aimed to hit the two birds.

to get two goals achieved or two things accomplished by doing just one thing.. an example would be going to the mall and while there you remembered two chores you have to do... well lets say one is to get your hair cut and the other is to pick up a new pair of sneaker's.. you then realize that "hey, there is a hair salon in the mall" and you decide to get your hair trimmed after you get your sneakers... you accomplished two things in that one trip.
