My mother-in-law had a problem with me from the beginning. Although she was very glad her son had married, she felt that I was not a very warm and caring person. After a few years, she came to realize that it wasn't that I wasn't warm and caring - it was that I didn't have the same personality as she did (very emotional - I'm quite rational). It took her years and I loved her all through her struggle with me.
The point is - I don't know what you did, but whatever you feel about your relationship, no matter what you do, you will NEVER make her what you want to make her. You have her son and that's all that matters to her. Treat her son well, continue to foster your marriage (not to please her, but to make you and your husband a success!!! - as well, ensure that your husband is an equal partner in your efforts TOGETHER.). Be fair and loving to your children, and eventually she will see that you and her son are truly meant to be together.

Falling on your face is always good but any variation will do. There are happy mother in laws but (more often) unhappy. They have lost the supreme power of motherhood that you have gained. If there is a jealous bone in their bodies they will be trying to get at you until their last breath. You can no more be friends than let your husband have girlfriends. Think of it as a business relationship.

I agree with a lot of the other responses. Stop trying so hard. I did everything to "win over" my new M.I.L. All I accomplished was getting calls when work needs to be done. Any other time she calls to talk to her son only. I tried for 5 years. I just finally accepted that this is how it is going to be. It's a shame really but I don't like feeling like a work-horse either.

Sweet Girl, the person you need to make happy is yourself and your husband. If your husband is happy, Mother in Law should be happy. If not, that's her problem.

apologize for what ever she is upset at you for (if it is something that warrants an apology). Did she like you before you made her mad? Just be nice to her, ask her to go shopping w/ you or something (if you think she'd go for that). Or if there is something she's really good at (ie. crafts, sewing) ask her to teach you some stuff...otherwise, some mom's just don't want to let go, she may take a while to come around. Good luck...

Have a great marriage and love your husband. If your mother-in-law isn't happy tuff. You didn't marry her and you do not need to please her.
To many husbands and wife's cling to mothers after married. Don't. You have your own family now and they are really relatives only. They are not part of your inner family anymore. YOUR MARRIED AND THAT IS YOUR FAMILY NOW.

If she's anything like mine tell her to F off. If you did something wrong then you should say sorry If not See sentence one. I can't stand my mother in law she's very conniving and back stabbing.

well you must of done something wrong. SO try to undo what you did. THEN try to prove to her that you are deserving of her sons love. & prove that you love him & want to be a part of his family. BUT that also applys to him & your family. just think about it as long as you both love one another then putting up with each others family once in a while isnt too bad.
