They were originally herding dogs that the Roman Army used to herd cattle as they crossed Europe and thereby take their food with them, Their use as guard dogs came later. The media seized on a few cases of attacks and gave the breed a bad reputation.

I used to have one and I used to tell people who were surprised at how friendly he was that he didn't read the papers and so he didn't know he was supposed to be a devil dog.

Because, like pit bulls, they have the POTENTIAL to kill someone. Not all pit bulls & Rottwilers are dangerous to people, I know that. But, it's their POTENTIAL to great damage to people and other dogs. There was a case in Wisconsin where this guy bred Rottweillers around his kids. One day his daughter, about 12 yrs old & a friend were playing in the house. The 6 Rottweillers jumped the daughter's friend and tore her to pieces in front of her. Now, that's some serious potential. It doesn't matter if her friend "DID" anything to set them off. The point is, those dogs tore apart a human being.

The truth is that Rottweilers are actually very smart dogs and they are really loving and protective. the only reason they have a bad reputation is because they are sometimes used as fighting dogs and people sometimes train them to be guard dogs so actually they are forced to be mean i think that all the bad stories about rottweilers have led people to believe they are bad when they are actually amazing and faithful creatures. so i blame society for their bad reputation.

Because they were bred to be guard dogs, and many people take that to mean they should train them to kill everything they see. Yes, that's an exageration, sorry if I upset the Literal Police.

Rotties do *tend* to be more aggresive than other breeds, they were bred to be aggressive. They can make perfectly fine pets, but you always have to be careful with them. It's like having a wolfdog. They can be trained, but I wouldn't trust them with small children. In the area where I live, it's illegal to have one. I do agree that it is just a bad rep, because it's not built into them to be mean, but I also know that the actual breed was bred to be aggressive. That was the point of the Rottie. Guard my property. Some people took that too far and gave them a bad rep, but whether it's deserved or not you'll have to discover for yourself. I have personally heard too many stories about the "perfect family pet" Rottie who suddenly turned on the 2 year old and maimed him. Who knows why, provocation, fear. It doesn't matter. I wouldn't let my child around one, but then again, I wouldn't leave my child unattended with a Golden Retreiver. Dogs are dogs, after all.

The real answer ----It all started with the movie--Damion. After that movie --people were terrified of them.It didn't do the dogs justice at all, and i find them to be very gentle and actually quite timid when raised properly.Watch the movie, its quite an old one, probably in the seventys or eightys, and im not sure if it might be spelt -Damien.It is a horror movie about a boy who has supernatural powers and he uses this to turn the dogs savage. The rottys in this film have been cropped to make there ears point upwards. It is now illegal to do this in some countrys.

Yeah, let's keep pretending this is a wonderful breed and bad owners are to blame, meanwhile more and more people will make a trip to the emergency room after being mauled by one.
The Rottweilers rep is well deserved.

because of the dame reasons pitts do some kid gets one thinking they are going to raise a fighter you know one really bad A** dog and when it finnaly escapes out the door then it bites some one it doesnt know and all because the owner thought it was a cool thing to be mean to it or put it through mean or harsh training hang chains off its neck with weights and such . then they get rid of the dog or leave it some where . and the dog is already abused and that is eventually going to be taken out on some unsuspecting person or even worse a child !!!! i really really hate HATE people who treat animals so badly . and deserve to be locked up for a long time

People do not care enough to research the breed and understand them.

They make an irresponsible choice of teaching the dog how to guard. This prompts aggression in them.

There is no need to teach a Rott how to guard. What you need to teach them is their place in the "pack" and show them firm loving discipline.

Those who hit their Rotts or try to physically discipline with them will cause the dog to distrust them and they will defend themselves.

They are not high strung dogs and if you see one acting in this manner it's because the dog is not getting the exercise it needs to release energy.
An unexercised dog of any breed leads to problems and behavior issues. Dogs by nature are movers and they still need

I personally admire the breed and they are one of the best dogs to own if you have the time to train and spend with them. They are very loyal and would put their life on the line to protect the family.
