Both equally seem to drive me a little nuts. When we become adults, I believe that we are all capable of making a rational decision about believing in God or not. (And that means ANY God, Christians)

We don't need other people telling us what or what not to believe in.....

I consider them to be equally disagreeable.
I learned long ago, that if a person can only talk about ONE thing; be it god, dogs, frogs or himself...that person is to be avoided.
In my opinion, any extremist is unbalanced and should be pitied.

Oh those nasty atheists! First, they come to your door uninvited and start in with their "Stop believing!" It's bloody awful! Then there's that tele-atheist crowd and their "There isn't a God!" message all over the radio & telly.

Puleeze!

Let me get this sraight ...You found yourself in a Q&A forum on Religion & Spirituality. And somehow you expected the participants would ask questions and provide answers without expressing any opinion on them?
Something like:
"To your question if there's a God. As a Christian I have to say there may well be one, but of course that's just my opinion and I could be wrong."
Or ..
"As an athiest I am inclined to look for evidence of the existence of entities. However, this is my own little idiosyncracy, so don't take it too seriously."

Both can be. What really drives me nuts is the closed minded-ness. Personally, I've never NEVR NEVER had an atheist try to force me to see things from their perspective. I have had Mormons, Catholics, Christians, Jehovah's Witnesses, and others knock on my door, hold demonstrations, cry about not having a large public chant of prayer, not having the right to have the Ten Commandments in front of a school or courthouse, etc. etc.
As someone earlier wrote, asking why atheists had to fight back to prevent things like "In god we trust" on money, and seperation of church and state, it is really quite simple. Would you(to the Religious crowd) want to spend money that says "Sony owns my Life"? You would not want me to force my religious views on you, right? That is what atheists want. If you choose to go out and believe in a religion that I feel has no basis in fact, or that I just don't like for any particular reason, then morep ower to you. I won't stop you. But I don't want to see you worshipping some cow, and displaying your mottos everywhere I go. You wouldn't want that to happen to you, why do it to us?

Karen Armstrong (very good spiritual writer) talks about both religious and secular fundamentalism. I agree -- fundamentalism is fundamentalism and it's ALWAYS annoying. I like what Thomas Jefferson has to say: "Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call to her tribunal every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a god; because, if there be one, he must approve the homage of reason rather than of blind-folded fear. Do not be frightened from this inquiry by any fear of its consequences.... If it end in a belief that there is no god, you will find incitements to virtue in the comfort and pleasantness you feel in its exercise and in the love of others it will procure for you."

Anyone who uses their beliefs as a way to belittle those who don't think the same as they do seem annoying to me. I find people of all religions very annoying at times. (Not all people just people from all religions or non-religions or whatever.) People focus on Christian as being annoying but I have been approached and berated from Muslims, atheist, Jehovah's witness and they all treated me badly because I choose to stay a Christian. People need to recognize the line between stating their point of view and trying to cram it down someone else's throat.

I don't mind atheists as long as they die easy :)

Seriously, I think they are two peas in a pod - so obstinate and determined to defend their intellectual turf that no dialogue is possible with either. It's kind of sad, really.

About your comment about making a "rational decision" about God: you have to understand that, for a lot of people, rational thought does not enter into the equation. Many people 1) doubt the capacity of reason to comprehend the divine and 2) believe that unless you subscribe to a predetermined set of beliefs (the "fundamentals" of the faith), then you are fooling yourself. Be careful about situating your view of the world on other people's shoulders - it doesn't always fit so nicely.

LOL..Polka accordian players??

The only ones who annoy me are the ones who insist that I must be brainwashed because I don't think just the way they do, and don't even realize how stupid that sounds.
Is it obvious that I am referring to Atheists here? At least "Bible thumping Christians" do what they do out of love. If they are too pushy, you can always tell them to go away, and they generally do. The worst thing they can do is pray for you.

The Bible thumping Christians

Die hard Athiests want a strict separation between church and state, which can be annoying when it comes to attacking minor things like people saying "Merry Christmas" during the winter holidays (take it as someone wishing you well and move on). However, most die hard athiests don't get riled up if you don't bring up religion. They simply don't want to hear about everyone's religion...but then who does?

The Bible thumpers not only want you to hear about their religion, but then they also want you to convert, feel personally offended if you don't, and then take on a superior and belittling attitude if you don't. Yeah... Personally I'd rather deal with someone trying to sell me a time share than deal with someone trying to save my immortal soul.

I'm an atheist, but I'm not diehard. Even so, it's quite obvious which I find more annoying. I'll let you make the inference, smart one. Why don't you choose one side and go with it if both drive you so nuts? I'm not saying to become that extreme either way, but maybe whichever one you choose to side with will be less bothersome. Then, you only have to rant about one instead of two!

The way I see it, Bible Thumpers are the WORST, they feel like it is their job to spread the word of God; unlike the quite atheists who sit quitely and wait for the religions to kill eachother off... I guess the point is this, people who claim a religion want peace, but will also fight with people who challange their opinions and for some reason, I think those are the people who are turning this whole world upside down.
