The Mongols. definitely. They once had empires spread all over asia and europe-- now, they are weaker though. But once upon a time... perhaps so.
The four empires of the Mongols were ruled by their own khan-- the Yuan dynasty, Il-Khanate, Chagatai Khanate, and the Golden Horde-- and dominated the commerce and military world.
"The Mongol Empire was the largest contiguous empire in human history. The 13th and 14th century, when the empire came to power, is often called the "Age of the Mongols". The Mongol armies during that time were extremely well organized. The death toll (by battle, massacre, flooding, and famine) of the Mongol wars of conquest is placed at about 40 million according to some sources." the mongols are a good choice but so are those in Nazi Germany. If hitler would have not stepped away from his original plan to conquer europe than he would have easily captured practically all if not all of europe. However, he decided to go after Russia before he had total control of the rest of europe. If he would have taken all of europe, which he pretty much already crippled england and france, he could hten have turned his whole force towards russia and probably have one. Also, if Japan hadn't attacked the USA, Japan and Germany could have controlled the majority of the world.

Tough question, but the truth is any one of the prior super-powers could have taken over the world. Unfortunately religion and greed always got in the way, so in fact none of the previous super-powers of the past are eligible, because they gave their opportunity up when they fowled up.
So the question should be rephrased to, who will be the one to take over the world in the future? At this moment it could be anyone... The Muslims, the Christians, the Jews(?) and if not religious, The US, the UK, the EU? Or will Canada wait until all hell breaks loose and be that underdog who was secretly building Nukes and strategies, behind that retarded "eh" at the end of every sentence, and wait until the time is right to take it all over?!??!? That my friend is the long version of a simple answer to a simple question... Good night!

I'm obviously not smart at his, nobody is perhaps. I'll write as far as I've read about.
But imagine this: 1/3 of world's population is in India. The rest of them have European, African or Arabic descendency or something different. If the muslim rulers (no offence intended whatsoever) in India had been successful in conversion of all other religions to Islam - a powerful Islamic state would've been possible which could've possible ruled this world.
HOWEVER, worth noting is how these cruel attempts were thwarted by the Sikhs, the Marathas and the Gorkhas in India - so this rule was never to be, never will be in the history or future of this world. These guys even saved other people and religion and luckily Indians were able to continue their faiths.
Well religion had to touched here because of the sort of question.
We need a world that can take over the bad elements not somebody who can take over the world.
:)

The Mongols were the only one with the ability. Their strategy tactics, logistics and troop quality were at least one hundred years ahead of what anyone in the world had at that time. The Nazis really couldn't have gotten very far outside europe. they were overextended and their economic and industrial power could not match up to the u.s. and britain. besides, they had no surface navy. the nazis were only in power a very short time, and their organization was already falling apart after ten years, just as inefficient as the confederacy.

Nazi Germany. They had the military and economic power. Hitler was a politician. He should have given his generals absolute control over military matters. His generals were some of the brightest strategists in history. If Hitler didn't get too involved with the military they could of taken over the world I think.

Mongols. Only if Genghis Khan did not die from illness, we could be speaking Mongolian right now.
Take over the world is easy. Problem is managing it.

The Brits had the largest empire, but I don't think anybody could have, because there are always people who oppose you, and until now, managing a world spanning empire was too hard because travel and communication were too slow. Now there are too many countries with nukes, so it would be very difficult.
