I asked this in the Japan subsection of the Travel section, but no one there even understood what a cruise was.

I have not yet been to Japan, but I always hear about how expensive it is. Since Japan is a set of islands whose major cities are ports, would a cruise of Japan be a cheaper alternative to land based hotels? (I realize this may sacrifice some of the exposure to Japanese culture.)

Quietwalker: You are a perfect example of what I mean by a person who doesn't know what a cruise is. Cruise ships stop at ports. In each port you can go ashore. Often the cruise line even has lists of sponsored shore excursions. A cruise is not just sitting on a boat.

I get the impression that no one on Yahoo Answers has been on a cruise and that no one has been to Japan.

I, personally, think that a cruise, not only do you have fun, but you can also enjoy the wonderful ocean breeze!! I think a cruise would definetely be a great choice!!

If all you'd like to see of an island is it's shores and silhouette against the skyline, then, yes, take a boat ride around Japan. If you want to meet the people, see how they live, eat their food, experience their country, then I suggest you at least wade ashore for awhile.

No way...

The really beauty of Japan is inside the land...

Don't try a cruise... because you won't see anything at all!

Cruises are for Bahamas! ;) islands with lots of corals to observe the diversity inside the water!

Have a nice day.
