I own two Maine Coons each less than a year old, Love them both and they have great personalities! Just need to groom them a little occasionally. My friend has two Rag-dolls, they have great personalities too. I prefer the Main Coon they talk more with different tones. Very calm, fun loving, easy going, friendly, great with kids, and grumpy adults.

You really need to decide if you are going to get a purebred cat, or adopt something from a shelter. Be prepared to pay for a pure-bred and be careful of breeders who under charge and can't provide references. You may want to go to a cat show to decide on a breed. There are many large breed cats you can view at the CFA site. Ragdolls, Maine Coones, Norweigen Forrest cats, British Shorthairs. Keep in mind a big animal means a big litter box, and big....err kitty waste. I breed Devon Rex cats but they are a very small, fine boned clown of a cat. I know many breeders and you should really do ytour research. Don't make an impulsive decision on a cat...It will literally com back to bite you, or.....pee on your shoe.

I have to vote for the Ragdoll, but I'm biased. When I decided to buy a pedigree cat to show/breed, I really did my homework. Have never regretted the decision and we have beautiful, sweet cats that we adore that do well in the ring.

However - I also have a rescue background, and if you're not set on having a pedigree cat, visit your local shelter and save a kitty! They also need homes. Sometimes you can even find a pedigree cat there (but don't expect to show it!) I cannot set foot in a shelter - unless I plan to bring someone home.

It depends on your personality and preference. If you like a cat that will follow you around and always want to be near you then Maine Coon or Maine Coon mix would be perfect. They have dog like qualities and love water. I have 2 and they are my constant companions. They are huge both over 16lbs I also have a ragdoll mix and he likes to be alone a lot but when he wants affection he comes and asks for it. He is very smart and likes to be near me but off to himself. He loves to play and will chase any thing that moves. Just some info on my cats. Thought that might help.

Ragdolls are really sweet, especially the male one (after being fixed). I don't know that much about maincoons except they shed like crazy. There is also a large cat know as a raggamuffin that has a very sweet personality and a Norwegian Forest Cat.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

I don't know what kind of cat breed you should get, but I know which one you shouldn't. Pursians. I've had two, because they're adorable, and I love them. But they are soooo hard to maintain. The washing, and the brushing, and I mean all the time. Plus because their face is flat, they have a hard time eating and drinking, and get food stuck in their eyes. So you have to clean their eyes out all the time too. Anyway I just thought I mention this... don't know if you were considering a Pursian or not... they are awfully cute.

Yeah. You really should adopt one from the animal shelter. All of my cats are adopted and they are soo sweet. If you want a kitten the best time is spring because their are so many being born. But, there are kittens also at this time just not as many.Good Luck!

Persian or Exotic Shorthair (like a Persian w/ short hair). Sweet, sweet, sweet cats! And they aren't prone to climbing the walls & jumping sky high. lol I have a male silver Persian who is huge. My Exotic is only 8 months old, so he's not through growing. Good luck in your decision!

If you aren't going to show the cat at cat shows, do go to the animal shelter or humane society and help one of those poor little innocent babies out. If you have room, resources, and the love to take care of a cat, make it count for one that REALLY needs you at an animal shelter, please!!! Just go and see what they have, I guarantee you'll find some ADORABLE cats and kittens that need you SOOOO much more. Save their lives.
