My Mum calls them 'bad breath cubes'! They seem to be stuck in your throat before you actually cough them up? What the hell is it?

It's not phlegm and it doesn't happen all the time. Just sometimes.

If you are a whale, then it is called Amber. Very pungent smell, and a great base for perfumes! Sells for $500 an ounce!

If you are a people, it is phlem, and indicates a bronchial infection, possibly a Streptococcal , or a Staphococcal infection... get to a doctor...

Largely, it is transferred from the anterior nares to the nasal mucosa when you pick your nose. STOP! Wash hands with soap, while singing Happy Birthday, twice through the first verse, for just the soap and water phase!

Staphylococcal and streptococcal infections
Staphylococcal infections

* More than 30 staphylococcal species exist
* All are part of normal skin and mucous membrane flora
* They are either coagulase-positive or negative
* The most important coagulase-positive species is Staph. aureus

Staph aureus

* 30% adults carry Staph. aureus in their anterior nares
* Carriers transfer the organism to skin allowing a portal of entry
* The organism has several putative determinant of pathogenicity including:
o Cell wall constituents
o Cell surface proteins
o Toxins (e.g. haemolysins and leukocidins)
o Enzymes (e.g. coagulase, protease, hyaluronidase)
* The organism is both aerobic and anaerobic on blood agar
* Microscopically it is gram-positive
* Forms clusters on solid media
* There is increasing spread of clones resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics (e.g. MRSA)
* Clinically it produces skin and soft tissue infections including

I have heard about this. My daughter used to cough up hard stuff all the time, and we couldn't figure out what it was. Then I read something about a year ago about how people who have bad tonsils do this. I realized that she quit complaining about coughing up that stuff after she had her tonsils out a few years back, so this could be what your problem is. The pus from infections gets hardened and then you cough them out. Dunno what the medical term is called, but thats what was happening to her!

don't trust your health to someone who is not a professional. see a doctor or at least search a medical website for further information. there are cheap or free clinics around.
